ところ 
1. About to A
しおり さ ん が 発 表 す る ところ だ か ら よく 聞 き な さ い 。 
Shiori is about to present, so listen well.
2. Be now A...ing (be in the middle of doing A)
私 た ち が 訪 ね た 時 、 彼 は 兄 さ ん に 英 語 を 教 え て もらっている ところ で あ っ た 。 
He was being taught English by his brother when we called on him.
3. Just finished A; Have been A...ing
あなた の ボ ー イ フ レ ン ド は 待 ち く た び れ て 、 今 帰 っ た ところ よ 。 
Your boyfriend got tired of waiting for you and left just now.
4. After A is done, the results of A are B
日 本 の 番 組 を 見 た と こ ろ 、 すごい 事 件 が 起 き て る ら し い 。 
Judging from the program from Japan, it seems like a major incident is happening.

The can both mean the same thing, but ようとする can also mean 'to try to a'. V (dict form)ところ strictly refers to a point in time just before the action starts.

there's many examples on this page with 所 instead of ところ, the kanji 所 refers to the physical place but most grammar points using ところ refers to time, so the kanji can make the sentences confusing by changing the meaning.

Can I suggest changing the "About to start A" from point 1 to "About to A" or just "About to..." ?
This because taking as an example this sentence:

僕は今出かけるところです。 I'm just about to go out now.
it's easier to think "About to go out" rather than "About to start to go out"
