a)Can you give an example, and b)where are you getting this from? I checked my lovely new grammar dictionary (I LOVE IT), and didn't see any reference to dropping it.
examples for you - 上手いのなんのといって，ほっぺたが落ちるくらいだ and 痛いのなんの，声も出なかった。 I got this from my 電子辞書, an older Canon Wordtank (the V80) which has been my stalwort compantion for 6 years now ^.‾ The main entry is actually for なんの - it says (the explanation's in Japanese only here) [名詞｢なに｣に格助詞「の」の付いたものから 文または文節に接続する。 1事柄を例示して並べ上げるのに用いる。「なんのと」の形で用いることが多く，｢など｣の用法に近い。｢お腹が空いただなんのと文句ばかり言っている」「まだ寝ているなんのと言って出てこない」2（「...のなんの｣の形で）程度の甚だしいことを表す。(then the two examples above)
