メリー is my personal favorite. Their lyrics are visceral in both a beautiful and strange sense, and the music is rich. Try , さよなら (レイン), and .
Moran is vocally similar, but their musical style is more consistent. Bleach, and へ are decent.
Kra is amusing and happy if oshare-kei is your thing. ラジオ, mothercoat, and lynch. are all good j-indies too. More notable j-rock other than those are Plastic Tree, ギルガメッシュ, D'espairsray, Dir en grey, the Gazette, Kagrra,, and シド, to add to what's already been mentioned.
I don't know a lot about jpop, sorry ^^;;

I have been in jpop but luckily I dropped it.
Especially Johnny's and other culture-shaking bands like Akiba 48 are actually scaring me, and I'm not kidding :o. So, I woudn't suggest this kind of music ;).

Also have been in jrock/visual key and I still like (and therefore recommend) bands like D'espairs Ray, Girugamesh, Siam Shade, Luna Sea (must listen to songs like Jesus or Rosier), and my all-time favourite, X-Japan. They had their first U.S. concert last year after a reunion. Anyway, just try to listen to Tears, Silent Jealousy, ...

Other bands I do love are Kishidan (One night carnival, Swingin' Nippon, にはしかない) and Animetal, this one being a band playing popular anime songs in heavy metal style.

Than of course I listen to Japanese metal bands, especially Vow Wow, Loudness (Soldier of Fortune, Crazy Nights), Make-up, (りんごの).

What else... themes from my favourite anime series (try the opening themes of Moyashimon or Evangelion, true masterpieces XD), and if we talk about Enka , my favourite artist would be Misora Hibari, no mistakes about it! Anything by her is fine for traditional japanese music lovers ;).

This is not exactly what you asked, but while we're at it, I thought I'd share some of my japanese music favourite material.

Flower Travelin' Band (フラワー・トラヴェリン・バンド) is a heavy psychedelic rock band from the 70s and probably one of my favourite ever. Their album "Satori" is a masterpiece.

Les Rallizes Dénudés (のラリーズ) is another psychedelic rock band that mainly did live recordings, including "'77 live" which is one of the best jam sessions ever.

Boris (ボリス) is a contemporary group which experimented a lot around dark, repetitive, "wall of sound" kind of music called drone. This style and other similar styles (psyché-noise, stoner) are an important part of the japanese underground scene, but this band sums it up best. Recommended album : "Boris at last - Feedbacker".

Check out a band called Sakanaction (サカナクション). A mixture of alt rock and electropop.

Definitely worth checking out the music videos to "Aruku Around" and "Bach no Senritsu o Yoru ni Kiita Sei Desu." The music videos are amazing especially "Aruku Around" xD

Kinda late, but if you want a touching song, check out Toilet no Kami-sama. For practice, aiko and Perfume are okay, since they sing quite slowly and clearly most of the time. Mr.Children has some really great songs too, 365 for example.

Omg, so many good tips on here. Special thanks goes to for Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, they are unbelievable!! I also would love to contribute to this collection: I don't think anybody mentioned Garage Chanson Show. For some reason they were really popular in Russia and I was really into them for a long time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxL_JtYy3oM Also Kokia! Her voice is so beautiful and somehow magic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tehrLcmRMwA

Kind of surprised nobody's mentioned Dragon Ash or Malice Mizer so far. That said, if you're someone who listens to a lot of Anison and is looking for a change, check out LAZY sometime. It's 70s-era Kageyama before he did the Dragonball soundtrack and really hit it big. Oh, and L'Arc en Ciel.

All the suggestions here are so good, especially some heartfelt performances on the First Take’s channel, and Ishikawa Chiaki’s songs. 💯

If you like 70's/80's pop/funk, I would highly recommend you listen to anything by Tatsuro Yamashita (). He's very well known in Japan and has been gaining a lot of traction in the states recently from the nostalgic energy he commands from his songwriting. He's the sole reason why I started learning Japanese in the first place.

I don't know if my taste matches, but:

Iori Kanzaki (e.g. Idol, Adult, Hated by life itself, Clumsy Man)

Creepy Nuts (e.g. のびしろ / Potential, To former prodigies)

Tatsuro Yamashita (e.g. Ride on Time, Mroning Glory, Fragile) - City Pop

Mafumafu+Soto's Ikanaide

。。。などなど

I would REALLY recommend this (sung by an ACTUAL SHARK):

Ride on Time
