I am just wondering, are there any games which helps to study Japanese? I know that getting a Japanese language Role Playing Game helps and that you would have to translate yourself to understand the story.
Any games on iO5 or Android?
I like Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger, but the problem of this kind of games is that you spend a lot of time increasing levels in which not much reading is involved. It would be better something like Phoenix Right, a game which is 100% reading and with a not so difficult vocabulary. The problem is that you'll need a japanese iTunes acount for iOS, I don't know about Android.
I'm not sure whether it's still available, but I found a computer RPG called Knuckles in China Land a while back. It focused on kanji meanings and readings, but it seemed pretty customizable, so you could probably use a vocabulary list instead. The only major issue I remember is that you have to input answers in romaji rather than kana... otherwise, it seemed pretty good as free games go, if you like the nostalgia factor.
Edit: I've never tried it, but a bit of searching also turned up this: http://chaosforge.org/taw/jrpg/
I think I found it in 4shared in: http://search.4shared.com/postDownload/kYzCqo9J/Knuckles_in_Chinaland.html
The problem is that it's for windows and I can't try it, also it seems that the developer stopped the project and wishes it would be forgotten altogether..
actually I just remembered one of the websites for studying Japanese I got at this seminar for (hopeful) Japanese teachers recently - https://www.erin.ne.jp/jp/ among other things on the site - it's the website for a (web-based) drama for teaching Japanese about a study abroad student named Erin - there's an RPG you can play. I haven't played it but our 先生 showed us a bit about it. Maybe give it a shot? I swear we got a whole list of useful websites... have to see if I can find it
I remember Erin! I watched quite a bit of it. Think theres 30 episodes in total. I remember trying the RPG but didn't do much in it. The videos has subtitles which are useful.
Just remembered I have a Nintendo DS so can get some Japanese games for that. Might try Legend of Zelda games or Ni no Kuni: Shikkoku no Madōshi (Studio Ghibli game).
Well, I found the list of websites that I got! But I feel like most of the game-style things that I *swear* were on the list actually aren't there - there's only 3 that I could even call 'games' at all:
The エリンが挑戦!日本語ができます website that I listed earlier, with quizzes and an RPG-style game
there's also a website for Japanese used in manga and anime - http://anime-manga.jp that has games and quizzes (as well as original archetypical manga)
and the すしテスト https://momo.jpf.go.jp/sushi which is more a test than a game (it's on Japanese in general I think, not specifically on sushi, but depending on how well you do you get sushi-ranked).
But maybe they'll be interesting? Besides the class I took I haven't really looked at any of these, but try them out?
ok for some reason when I type the link the site is adding another http:// to the front of the url - either just delete that or google search 'sushi test' and it'll come up! :-[
Yeah. I found that out when I tried to link something before.
Just noticed you posted 1139 times on the forums! OMG!!! You must have been here for a long time ~ xD

Don't remind her. :p
I have a DSi, but I can't afford to buy games. However, I do have Chrono Trigger. The thing is, I switched it over to English as soon as I realised I could. There was just too much kanji in Japanese! :o Not that there is any time to play games, but you know, 10 minutes in the toilet with nothing else to do... gotta study somehow...
Good luck to whoever goes the route of improving their reading through games and manga, though. I guess you gotta do something, and it's all practice. :)

Gecko - :P
Natsu - I guess it's been a couple of years? But I also just have way too much free time at work (like right now) and can only read so much of こころ before my eyes start to cross!
I was looking through some stats and there are some people with more genki points then mysticfive and I thought she had the most! ~ Was aiming to topple mysticfive somehow. hehe
Problem with playing rpg games is that you become impatient translating and just go for English version.....

If you are really gonna try to learn another language through a video game, the way to do it is with an MMORPG.
I've been playing Everquest off and on with these two Taiwanese brothers for like, 11 years or something. When they started, they couldn't really understand English at all. Now, they are pretty decent I guess. No studying grammar or vocab, just struggling to read quest text written in some off-the-wall psuedo-medieval language. And of course communicating with the mostly English-speaking population. Everquest doesn't have an easy way to switch the language, either, so there's really no "cheating."
I dunno anything about Japanese MMOs but I thought Final Fantasy had a Japanese version, although that's kind of dated now I guess. I'm sure with the amount of video game オタク that there are in Japan, there's gotta be some decent MMOs. The best part about it would be that you could tell everyone, "Don't bother me, I've got to study Japanese now" while you go level up your character...

Good point, it was something I considered before and mmorpgs is a good way for learning. I played 2 and I always find it amazing that foreigners were able to use english and communicate, although sometimes it can be broken but practise makes perfect sense xD Unfortunately, Im not sure whats a good mmorpg to play with japanese players.
Problem is, playing those game can get addictive and you would spend less time on actually studying.

Yep.
