Just thought I would revive this post and see what newer games people are playing/ using to practice Japanese? I currently am using the zelda series mentioned above along with Ni no kuni and the original dragon quests on the famicom/super famicom (My Japanese girl friends father found them in storage and sent them over to us :) )

Your girlfriend father is my hero ;D Edit: to answer the question,I'm still playing The Last Remnant on pc,the only difference is that I found this link http://www12.plala.or.jp/rsaga/remnant/main/1-01.html wich basically has all the dialogues you encounter during the game,so I play the game and switch to that site when I fail to understand something ;D

Ok so I have been reading around and I guess golden sun is also a really go DS game to use as you can click on the kanji for the furigana if you get stuck.

Not quite a game, but in a couple days, トレーニング (KanKen Training) will be available for 3DS -- I think this is the first Japanese-learning application specifically for the 3DS. Looks like it's officially endorsed by the foundation that administers the kanken tests, and covers all the way from 10きゅう to 1.

It's too bad I can't play is, though. My 3DS is American and they're region-locked. Unless someone's heard of a work around? I've been playing tons of Japanese DS games on it no problem, but 3DS Nintendo decided to lock...

@janothar: that game will be geared toward japanese people who need to review their own language or it will be geared toward english people who want to study japanese? In other words, how much the game will be accessible for a foreigner beginner of the language? PS:Nintendo is going to release the new version of 3DS,wich will feature amongs other things an improved processor and exclusive games like this one wich can't be played on the standard 3ds,therefore we have to purchase a new one anyway, right? x_x You could take the opportunity to sell your 3ds and import the japanese 3ds along with those games ;)

It's a test prep app for the kanji kentei (kanji certification) exam. It's not a general Japanese for new learners course, but it'd be valuable for people at intermediate+ levels who specifically want more kanji practice, or are preparing to take the kanji kentei for some reason.

@MarcusAseth: of course the game won't be translated, but the problem is that the 3DS is regionlocked. I went to a lot of trouble to import an English one so that I could play games to relax, and can't afford a second one for Japanese stuff. And I'll wait on the new one until I see specific games I want to have.

I've been gathering certain games for the Wii and 3DS, as my girlfriend and I have both in our apartment. Any Mario game (Mario Kart, Wario Land, etc) are all very good, as there are usually English or simple Japanese menus, and...it's Mario! You already know how to play it. ;) I recently beat おどる:メイドインワリオ/Wario Ware: Smooth Moves for Wii, and while I loved it in America, the jokes in Japanese, related to the controller positions, had me laughing. For example, つなひき, てんぐ, and my favorite にとりゅ (for when you are using both the Wiimote and the Nunchuck). I've also been playing Pokemon, but I had it set in English for my first play through (to really enjoy it and relax with it). Been considering restarting and setting it to Japanese now that I know how the new game plays.

Did someone already mentioned - Shin Megami Tensei IV - for 3DS? I've purchased it from nippon-yasan for 42 euro,it will arrive in 6 days and it is awesome because not only it is an rpg with a lot of dialogues,it also has voice acting on most of it and furigana!!! Check the image below! ;)

(And they're older now, cheaper, AND can be played on any region 3DS!) I feel your pain, though. I specifically am boycotting Nintendo after the DS because of this choice. Other consoles, handheld or not, allow me to play English and Japanese titles on the same hardware with no issues. Nintendo has some good titles, but not good enough to forgive that horrible, horrible move.

If you release a new region free 3DS/Wii U now, you effectively sign a death warrant on any outstanding consoles or handhelds that currently exist in stores. And of course, "reconsidering" from Nintendo could mean "we hear what you're saying, and we're not going to give you what you want. While a yes will keep people on our backs about when precisely it will happen, and a no will make people avoid our consoles altogether if region locks affect them, giving a vague answer will keep people hoping, so... yeah, reconsidering.".

I have an old American Nintendo DS,( Not 3DS ) and Japanese 3DS. This game works on both. For studying Japanese for beginners and upper levels I highley recommend this game. http://www.play-asia.com/kageyama-method-tadashii-kanji-kakitori-kun-kondo-wa-kanken-ta-paOS-13-49-en-70-2c9x.html http://www.100mas.jp/kakitorikun/ >- Official Webpage This game covers kanji, reading and using the kanji, and grades your stroke order. It covers hiragana and katakana too and will grade them as well. It also checks your daily progress. This game was advertised in Japan targeting Japanese school children as a study aid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTuUw3fKGQo > Commercial

If you keep your eyes open you can pick up a used DS lite in decent condition and this game for less than 2000 yen!

Which is all that really matters...especially when you have more to learn. (・∀・) It's so good though~My teachers loved testing it in class.
