I'm on Genki 1 chapter 3 and I want to study the 15 or so kanji as part of the vocab. However, as soon as I turn on any kanji vectors, I get questions for all vocab words with any kanji in them, which clearly I haven't yet studied.
How am I supposed to study the specific kanji vocab without all kanji? I must be doing something wrong. -Mike
If you go to Settings under the Quizzing tab, there should be a setting box for all textbooks and proficiency tests that you have studied. If you set all of those to not studied, and set Genki I to Chapter 3, you should be able to make it so you only get those kanji.
Then, under the "What kanji should be marked as learned:" setting, "click Kanji marked in my study history (above)" so that it has a checkmark. That should, theoretically, work.
If you only want to study the 'kanji vocab' for chapter 3 but not for anything else in your mastery list, I'd recommend the Settings page like 勝利 said. You can mark the study history so it says chapter 3 for genki, and it'll 'unmark' all the other kanji so it doesn't appear and get quizzed on.
You can also choose the 'kanji that I've studied' option so any kanji you study in kanji quizzes will get added; for a lot of people, this is a simpler choice because it'll automatically update your known kanji list as you study (instead of having to go back and change the kanji study history every time you advance).
I followed the suggestions and I must be missing something.
I have "Use the kanji from the textbooks/tests listed below" checked and Genki I Chap 3 selected. I also have "Use kanji marked in textbooks/proficiency tests" selected.
When I go and add "Choose the kanji given the hiragana" to my schedule, I get asked to find the kanji for "たべる", which is not in the 15ish kanji vocab words introduced in Genki I chapter 3. The vocab does include this as kanji, but it's not the focus of learning in the chapter (numbers and time kanji). I have the "Kanji Vocabulary Lessons" for chapter 3 selected, but it doesn't include たべる.
What am I missing? It feels like something obvious. -Mike
If you're making a timed schedule or something, make sure you click Kanji, not vocab. If you're just studying with out the schedule: when you make a quiz, go to the tab that just says Kanji Lessons, NOT Kanji Vocabulary Lessons. Then it should just give you the ones that are in the back of the book, not the ones on the vocab list. I think that might work?
Thanks for the additional info. I have figured out the problem, I think.
Based on everything I can tell, your schedule is not made from the Kanji Vocabulary Lessons, but the Vocabulary Lessons that come in the front of the book (chapter 5). I'm thinking that you accidentally clicked back to the Vocabulary Lessons tab when you originally built the lesson. This would explain the kanji that you haven't learned yet, as well as the vocab that hasn't yet appeared.
I would highly recommend that you rebuild your schedule. I believe it was just a small mistake when the schedule was made - and since you named the schedule 'Chapter 3' like you had planned on studying, it became a bit confusing. Go to schedule settings and choose to remove the schedule (although you will lose the quiz stats on those actual lessons, all your mastery levels on the individual terms are preserved - those are global throughout the site, and much more important than lesson stats), then recreate it.
I went ahead and tried creating a schedule on chapter 3 of the kanji vocabulary myself, and it worked fine, so hopefully this'll fix yours.
No, this isn't a problem with my timed chapter 3 schedule (though i have other problems there, see other threads), but my regular mastery schedule which contains chapters 1-3 and to which I'll continue adding things moving forward.
Maybe you're confusing my two issues with different schedules and attributing problems in one to both? -Mike
Note that I'm going to delete my single-chapter timed schedule as soon as the other thread is figured out (leaving it around so you can debug it), but again this is a problem with my un-timed mastery schedule and there are no chapters selected other than Genki 1-3. The issue of additional vocab that I hadn't seen is specific to my other schedule, not this one.
The problem I'm having here is that it wants to show me kanji vocab from chapter 3 (eg 食べる) that isn't part of the kanji introduced in chapter 3 (the 15 or so at the end of the book, eg 一, 二, 時, etc).
If anything doesn't appear to be correct within the actual quizzing, the best way to report it is through that 'problem with this answer/question' link(s). Those are pretty cool because in addition to sending me your message, it sends me a copy of the page the site sent you (so I can see what you see at the time of sending the error) and a bunch of data regarding the quiz you're taking - I can usually find the problem inside of that.
So just...next time it pops up, you can use that :)
Also - in regards to ときどき, it is in both the kanji vocab list for chapter 3 as well as the lesson vocabulary for chapter 3.
How'd I fix it? It's technical and not too easy to explain :P
