Forums - [MOBILE] Play pronunciation does not start automatically

I have "Play pronunciation after answering a question" enabled. This works as soon as I manually start the sound once (using the tiny loudspeaker button). But it does not start playing the audio automatically. For each quiz session I have to use the loudspeaker symbol once. Also it does not play the pronunciation for the last answer (after the quiz is finished). This behaviour is not new. It's the same for renshuu 2. But it's now more difficult to use the button to start it manually. I'm using iOS (8 at the moment, but it never worked as far as I remember).

This is unfortunately linked to restrictions on mobile devices to keep websites from auto-playing sounds unless the user clicks on something. (This is primarily done to prevent websites from automatically downloading potentially large files and burning through a user's data plan) I've spent some time looking into the alternatives, and this is what I feel will be most useful and consistent. Before I implement it, I would love to get your thoughts on it. 1. First off, we're going to simply have to remove the 'play after a question' option for mobile - I cannot think of a way to make the feature work consistently, and I would prefer to have it not at all compared to have it work only in certain situations. 2. For the listening quizzes, we have a bit more flexibility. Once you, as you noticed, click on a sound event once, it 'gives' the browser permission to auto-play anything else as long as the page doesn't reload (the questions/results within a quiz load through AJAX - which is a way of updating the page without reloading it). So, for mobile when there are listening questions present with the autoplay enabled, it would present a 'start studying' button at the beginning of a quiz. I have not yet decided if I should put in text explaining it what it is for. This will be tied to a 'silent' audio file, but will be enough to give the browser permission to auto-load all audio files after that. It's either a workaround like this, or disabling auto-play altogether.

I didn't know that. That's actually a reasonable feature of the browser then. I like the auto-play. At least when I'm connected to WiFi. So having two buttons to start a quiz would be even better than the option. One button to start the quiz with automatic pronunciations enabled and one button to start without. Is that what you meant? An explanation could be given in the FAQ. Maybe even with the technical background you provided here.

Unfortunately, the buttons would not be able to be set up that way. Any time the whole page reloads, the browser 'loses' the permission to auto play. When you are, for example, on the dashboard and you click 'start a quiz', it loads a fresh page (the quizzing page), so you would have to then click a button on that page to enable the auto-play. I've got some time today, I'll try setting it up!

I got a pretty good setup made, and it's on beta now. Please give it a try!

The interface looks promising. Unfortunately it doesn't work (yet?). It did not automatically play the pronunciations.

Hmm - I tested on Android, which also had the original problem. I'll try iOS this evening.

I just checked an iOS 8.1 / iPhone 4, and it worked. Can you confirm for me what OS/iPhone/browser you're using that is causing the error?

I used an iPad with iOS 8.1.1. Today the question did not appear at all (and auto-play does not work either).

Hmm - got it to work on ipad with the same level - it sounds like you might have accidentally turned it off - if the setting is off, it will not prompt for the question. Try going into the listening quiz, then at the top of the question box, does it say 'auto play' or 'wait for click'? My guess is that it says auto-play - which actually means auto-play is not on (I need to rename those buttons). try switching it over, then reload the quiz. Edit: renamed the buttons, should be much easier to understand now.

Is there any way you can move the auto play option to below the listen to question box? IMHO it would clarify that it is an option, not a requirement.

After switching and reloading the page I was able to activate auto play. It works for listening questions. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something but I thought this would also enable the pronunciation of the previous question (the way it used to work - I saw the new red text in the options now though). Why does it only work for listening questions? Or is it because it cannot work for the last question (after the quiz is finished)? Did you disable it now completely only because of that? That would be a great pity!

じゅうり - excellent point, I'll move it to the bottom-right corner of the box. ドイツの: glad to hear it is working. Unfortunately, I have disabled the playing of the terms after the questions. You are correct in that I disabled it because it would not work for the final question. It may seem minor, but at this point, I would rather have a feature disabled than have one that does not work consistently. In your case, we've had this discussion so you understand what's going on, but for every other user trying to use the site, it'll either require them to have to come to the forums and report it, add what I feel is unnecessary complexity to the site by explaining it somewhere, or simply leave it 'broken' and have them think "huh, this site doesn't work" and leave them with some dissatisfaction. I do have a way to fix ALL of it in the future, but it'll take a much larger revision to the site (really big, actually), and it'll have to wait until a later version.

on desktop site, Chrome/Windows, the auto-play is now not working - I see the box (pictured in post above) to turn atuo-play on/off, but every time I advance to a new question the button is set to 'off,' and then I click it to 'on,' and still have to push the 'play' button for that question... and then answer the question and it's set back to 'off'

Does it do that for the entire quiz, or just at the beginning? Currently, the site prebuilds questions, so if you are doing question one, it is prebuilding 2. If you, on question one, change it to auto-play, question 2 will not autoplay, but question 3 will. This isn't ideal, but it is a known shortcoming right now. Or is it more than this?

I wish i hadn't started this topic. The previous behaviour wasn't perfect. But for me it was much better than what we have now. Wouldn't it be possible to add a small explanation to the final question like the one in the box at the beginning? And/or an FAQ entry?

did that for at least 3-4 questions before I ended the quiz, but since then it's been working properly

mystic: I figured out a way to make it work immediately for the next question, and is now implemented. I tested it myself, but would love to have you confirm it as well. じゅうり: it's been moved to the bottom right ドイツの: it's unfortunate that I cannot get everything in perfect condition, but I need to prioritize what gets fixed first, and for what it'll take to fix that relative to the benefit from fixing it, there's simply a lot more things that need to get fixed first. It might be the case that I get it done for 3.0, but I cannot make any promises. The vast majority of users will not read an FAQ entry, and you'd be surprised at just how much of a webpage is ignored by the average user unless it is a)leaping out at you (visually) or b)something they are forced to read. I would really like to wait until I can fix this properly, and in the meantime, be glad that a major bug (the auto-play not working for mobile) has been fixed, which is thanks to you bringing this to my attention!
