The way it works now, the crossword game is not as "smooth" as it could be for computer users sweatdrop.gif

As for now,I have to click where I want to insert the answer, type in the answer, then click again on another place to give another answer. This imply that instead of quickly shooting answers with my keyboard at lightspeed,I have to take away my right hand, put it on the mouse, move it,click on another box,put it back on my keyboard and give the answer. And then repeat.

For a crossword let's say with 60 answer required,I'm doing this repetitive movement 60 time. Now,I'm not pointing out this because I'm lazy, but because I kind of use heavily the tendons and muscles of my forearms (like typing really fast and really a lot,or during endless sessions of play,or doing graphics with the computer) therefore my arms now have a limit of strain beyond which I get an inflammation (is that the english word?!) meaning I cannot use them for days,if that happens.

Therefore this is the only thing preventing me from doing crossword x_x

A simple fix would be that after I type and confirm an answer,it automattically opens the slot to type the next one, allowing me to keep my hands on the keyboard and saving time (and health!) cutting away those 60 pointless movements :)

Hmm - I can add that as an option they can turn on; however, I think a lot of people jump around. I could probably do that, and also add keyboard shortcuts to jump "into" a clue - like d15 for 15 down, a30 for 30 across. That seem good?

Adding it as an option to turn on and off seems perfect! bigsmile.gif

I too jump around if I try an N3 quiz, but for N5/4 pretty much never since I know all the vocabs,so On/Off toggle suits all situations :)

Regarding the shortcut I leave that consideration to you, because I do crossword in a "reverse" way, meaning I randomly click a box and go along with wathever clue I get, never watching the "clue bar" on the left teeth.gif

But a shortcut that I think would be useful is a button to "skip to the next" for those rare times I can't recall a vocab and I want to do the next one without the need to using the mouse, the perfect key would be the "Tab" button (I think is called, the one on top of Caps Lock) which already does something pretty much similar (like when you compile a site registration page and jump to the next field using it) :)

1. The shortcuts are already in the site (had just forgotten about them) for opening up a clue based on number and direction; there's info about them in the rules/shortcuts popup

2. The tab button jumping from one form field to another is standard browser behavior, and hijacking it to jump from one clue to another would not be a good idea.

3. The "go to the next clue after you finish one clue" is...proving to be extraordinarily hard without (as far as I can tell) rewriting huge chunks of the crossword code. Will keep thinking on it, but it might be ...some time before I can get this done (if it is as difficult as it appears to be, it might not make it into this release).

the crossword shortcuts (number + arrow key) don't seem to be working... I've tried a couple different crossword puzzles, both kana and kanji versions, too!

[[Edit]] the 'hide completed puzzles' checkbox isn't working either

The shortcuts should be better.

mysticfive - can you tell me which area you are trying to click the hide completed puzzles, and which browser you're using? It is working fine for me, so it's probably something specific to what/how you are accessing the page.

yup, shortcuts are working

On the 'hide finished puzzles' thing, I'm looking at this, on the crossword main page:

after I complete a puzzle and go back to the main page, the finished puzzle still shows up, even with this checked. Unchecking and rechecking the box doesn't fix it either - only reloading the page will hide the completed puzzles.

Ah...hmm..I can probably get it to refresh the contents if there have been any "saves" made on the crossword panel. Will take a look at that.

mysticfive: it now does this on the beta! Anytime the puzzle you are working on is updated, it will force a reload of the other tabs if you go back to them a second (third) time.

Shortcuts do excist and I'm sure they are working, but I find them unhandy (my opinion). I really do like Marcus' idea, and especially as an idiviual settings option.

---------------------

Recently my friend discovered a website with Japanese crossword puzzles. (Unfortunately those cannot be solved online.)
Right now I feel pretty much crossword addicted. They help me memorise words and in some ways they work (for me) even better than quizzes. However, due to the small choice of vocab, especially N5 puzzles tend to get boring after a while. Always the same clues and always typing the same answers... *sigh*

My idea:

Would it be possible to create puzzles with Japanese clues (other than kanji clues) like in "real" crossword puzzles?
It could be added as a 3rd option next to English and kanji. (Guess that's too much to ask for?)

Or maybe you could create like one puzzle each month that has Japanese clues only. It could be a midlevel puzzle that e.g. covers mostly N4/N3 vocab and a few terms of each of the other JLPT levels. Not too easy so that it would steal the fun for N1 users, but also not too tough to scare N4 users away. A little something for everyone wink.gif

It's really not that important. I'm thinking of it more as a future improvement to the site. I'm a computer blockhead, so I don't know how you generate/create those puzzles. If it's too much work, just forget about it. I was just getting excited...
