I don't know if you can tell me here as everyone will be able to see but what is your method for obtaining the different Kao coins?  As a beta tester I would like to help and see if all of the coins drop but I would need to know what the requirements are for the special and rare ones.  I also was wondering if it could not be based on quiz size.  The reason is that I for one used to do 300 question quizzes when I had a job that would let me but now I really only have time to do a quick 20-50 question quiz here and there.  That being said would it be possible to base it on the streak of correct questions.  If I answer 500 correct questions in a row does it really matter if it was done over 25 quizzes or over only 2? The main reason I would like to know is that I seem to keep getting the same drops and have never gotten a silver or gold.

I don't mind sharing that information. It is beta, after all, so these things might need tweaking!

Basic rates;
Common: 95%
Rare: 4%
Super rare: 1%

The rates climb if you get more than 85% correct in a quiz. Actually, as of writing this, the correct bonus has grown significantly.

Now, if you get less than 85% correct, or a quiz with less than 20 terms, it'll dip a bit, but not (with the new adjustments) so much that the rare/super rare become impossible.

Now, there is a number that, if you have a quiz smaller than that, it's going to be limited to a subset of common coins. This is to prevent people from spamming quizzes that are really short.

Based on what you wrote, though...you needn't worry about hitting that.

So with these new rates, you should see rare/super rare popping up more!

But I think you should increase a little the chances of Super Rare because there isn't much difference between 1% and 2%. The chances of getting a rare or super rare are almost the same. Maybe would be better 3% or 4%? Or reduce the super rare to 0.5%? Or reduce the super rare to 0.5% and increase the rare to 3.5%...

And some question:
If I do 2 quizzes with 10 terms each one (with the option Study Multiple), this count as 20 or as 10? Because all my lessons have 10 terms T _ T

Well... I if the minimum is 20 terms and somebody is doing a quiz with 1 term to get coins faster, I think you should to the next calculation to solve that:
20 terms -> 97% chances of normal coins
1 terms -> x = 4,85% chances of normal coins

Chances to get a normal coin = 4,85%
Chances to get a rare coin = 0,1%
Chances to get a super rare coin = 0,05%
Chances to get something = 4,85% + 0,1% + 0,05% = 5%
Chances to get nothing = 100% - chances to get nothing = 95%

Sorry - I made a mistake in those numbers. It's 4% for rare, 1% for super rare. This is what they've always been - I just mistakenly entered it before.

If checks the rates based on the numbers for the quiz, not for the lessons. So 2 lessons at 10 terms each = a 20 term quiz.

For now, I'm going to not make any more changes, and leave the corrections to the bonus rates in and see what kind of numbers those generate.

Just wondering about the current valentine's day drops.  Do they have a higher drop rate than other coins as you can only get them now?  I have gotten the Gold Baby twice and the silver goldfish twice over the past two days but none of the other gold or silver coins.  If I look at the percent chance of a coin drop I would have the 1% chance for a gold coin divided by the 4 types of gold coins giving me a 0.25% chance of getting the valentine's day gold coin.  If I do 20 question quizzes I would have to answer about 8000 questions over the 7 day period the coins are available to have a real chance at getting the coin.  I don't know if it is just me but that seems really hard for most users.  The fact that I also got two of the same gold coin makes me wonder if the algorithm should be adjusted to give priority to coins you don't already have.

I noticed the drops are really quite random. I only got one of the rare coins but all the super rare ones (some of the super rare ones I got multiple times).
I also think it would be cool if you can slightly increase chances for rare or super rare by taking larger quizzes. For me a comfortable quiz size is usually somewhere between 50 and 100 terms and when I do more than that I am sometimes tempted to quit halfway. It would be cool if the coins could work as a support to go through the last couple of questions, without ending up with another pair of socks.
I was also wondering with coins that are available for a limited amount of time, are you planning on having them return every year or are they just super special? In that case I would suggest maybe giving them a special colour, so it is clear they are event coins.
I must say that I have been doing more quizes than before, because I am curious which coin I might find next, so that part works well :)

Limited edition drops have an increased chance of grabbing them.

I am not planning on adjusting the algorithm to ones you have not gotten. What I would like to do in the future is add a way to recycle coins - if you have 30 common coins, you can reroll for a rare one (just as an example).

I don't think I will ever arrive at a perfect balance - between being "fair" and preventing people from exploiting the system.

Additionally, I think it's hard to think about things yet because the number of coins is still so low!

I will be recycling limited edition coins each year - we're hoping for one limited series each month, so 12 seasonal events.

I am still tweaking the bonuses - how much extra you can get for larger quizzes. I also plan on grading the percentages to take into consideration whether the user cuts out in the middle, or makes it to the end.

Are you still doing increased chances for limited edition drops? Because for the Valentine's Day ones, I got at least one of the common limited edition coins every few quizzes, but currently I usually see only 1 limited edition coin appear per day of quizzing several hundred questions; also every time I've gotten a gold or silver coin it's always a normal one, never one of the current limited edition ones. It seems like they are appearing at the same frequency as the other non-limited edition coins.

They are more frequent, yes. If you recall, when I had them the other time, the rates were turned up WAY too high for the first couple of days, and I turned it down after that. I have not made any changes since then.

I'm having the same experiences as htatsuha this time. While I had no problem gaining all the valentine's day coins in the last two days they were available, I've now studied about 3k terms with at least 85% correct terms every quiz (quiz size is 60 for vocab, 30 for kanji), but I'm still missing the gold one.
I guess you can't really help that it's sometimes harder and sometimes easier when it's all random. The recycling system that Michael described might help out with that, though.

Same here, only missing the gold one. It's weird because I've usually gotten at least 1 gold or silver coin per day of quizzing, but the limited edition gold one never shows up, and on some days I get lots of the regular rarity limited edition ones, but on others I only get one, but get 3 of the tea coins, and 3 of the beer ones, and 3 of the plane ones, etc. It definitely feels like the standard coins, or at least some specific ones, have a higher likelihood of appearing than the limited ones, at least under certain circumstances. Maybe I need to increase my quiz size...

By the time the next round is up, I'm probably going to bump up the amount of logging for the kaocoins. Right now, the site just records what you got. However, it will help in these cases to include quiz size, accuracy, and the resultant percentages that result from those numbers. I'll make sure I do that before the next limited edition round!

Loving the Kao coins.  Would it be possible to have a tracker of how many of each kao coin you receive?

At some point, yes! I want to do more with the coins, but I'm spending all my time doing the final adjustments on beta.

How hard would it be to implement the tracker like in the following mockup (completion instead of availability)?

PRETTY HAR....not bad. I want to add a bunch of stuff in there, so be honest. That is one of the things. First, though, I've got some golden week exclusive coins to put up in a few hours!

Would it also be possible to add some special marker for seasonal ones?
I currently have 5 coins which I cannot get for a year...

I'm still thinking about how best to mark them. I will also have filters (which will stay permanent across page reloads) so you can filter out ones like that!
