I enjoy earning the Kao-coins! However, I find that now that I've earned a bunch, when I click to reveal the Kao-coin I've earned it's usually just one that I've had for a while now. So it actually becomes a disappointment, and I've wondered if I should just stop checking if I've earned a new coin. I have a few suggestions that could solve this:
If the coin has already been earned, simply display the coin already in a revealed state. That way the users see that they "earned" a coin, but aren't disappointed the majority of times they flip over a coin. But the new coins would still be hidden, allowing the users the excitement of flipping over and discovering the new coin.
If the coin has already been earned, don't display a coin at all.
But again, the new coins would show up, allowing the users to feel the excitement of flipping over and discovering the new coin.
This gives less attention to Kao-coins, but when a new coin is earned, it's all the more special.
Either or both of these could be an optional setting, so that the user could select which behaviour they want to see after a quiz (original, have earned coins already visible, don't show already earned coins).
Thanks for the comments. We still only have about 50 available, and would like many times that, but it'll take time to reach that state.
I'd like to see what other beta users think about your suggestions. I certainly want to minimize any disappointment that you'd have been using the site!
I personally like the idea of only showing the coin when it is new. Right now I seem to only get the same 5-10 coins over and over. Only once in a while a different coin shows up but more than likely it is one I already have so I am starting to get turned off to the idea of Kao coins in general. I find I study way more on this site when there are Kao coin challenge weeks, like now with golden week, but tend to get depressed that even though I answer around 10,000 questions over two weeks I still don't get every coin, it happened the past two times where the gold coin never showed up. One suggestion I was thinking about was if you decided how many questions needed to be answered to get a coin then the quiz size would have no effect. For an example if 20 questions were needed to get a coin you could answer 4 five question quizzes and get one coin on the last quiz or if you had your settings to a 50 question quiz you would get 2 different coins for your first quiz and 3 coins on your next quiz as you would have answered a total of 100 questions earning you 5 coins.
I'm actually fine with how it is now. At least I now have a routine of finishing the quiz, clicking the coin, selecting the next schedule to quiz, repeat. Whenver a new coin shows up I am pleasantly surprised, if there is no new coin it does not bother me (as I don't expect to see new coins that often at this stage).
I forgot to add the pity counter! I'll add that soon. If you are unfamiliar with a pity counter, it is a term used for gacha style games, where your chance at getting a rare or super rare goes up the longer you get commons.
I've also got heavy logging going on with the coins this time around, so I can identify if the percentages are what they should be.
Lastly - we are probably going to unlock all previous limited edition so they are always available (or at least, the commons), and then make them extra available for those periods. Still thinking about the best way to do it.
I quickly added the totals for each type that you have, and some toggles to hide/show certain groups. Pity counter is not yet added.
I suppose this is just as good of a place as any to throw out an idea I have. The artist for all the new kao artwork since last year is my wife. We have every intention to continue adding kao coins for years to come, along with the kao weekly drawings and the kao manga.
She is also big into donating, and I was wondering if, on top of the stuff we already plan to add, users might be interested in cheap requests for drawings of specific kao-coins (or kao weekly drawings) done as a commission of sorts. Perhaps something like patreon.com. All proceeds from the commissions would go to charities and/or NPOs, and all users of renshuu (I would never put anything made through this behind the renshuu pro wall) could enjoy additional kao content.
I realize this is a very small group of people reading this particular thread, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on the idea.
Money's a little bit tight for me (just bought our first house), but I really like the idea.
As a small aside, the toggles all work except for the limited coins (this is on the quiz results page):
EDIT: On closer inspection, there seems to be a greater problem. If I have all the filters checked, it shows coins #1 through #60 consecutively. But if I uncheck "limited", it shows #1–57, then #60. This implied that there are only two limited coins, #58 and #59, but there are supposedly 14 limited coins.
Added a pity counter. The values are hidden, but the longer you go without getting a rare (or higher), the higher your chance of getting one is. After you get one, the counter resets back to 0.
Regarding the toggles to show/hide the groups, I've found a bug that seems to be linked to the "Only shows ones I've gotten" toggle.
When you have hidden all the groups, then use the "Only shows ones I've gotten" toggle, all the Kao-coins reappear, and the show/hide groups toggles no longer work until you refresh the page. Similarly, if you have hidden some groups and try the "Only shows ones I've gotten" toggle, those particular toggles don't work, though the toggles that were still showing seem to work.
About being disappointed about getting an "old" Kao coin: I personally don't mind that.
However, I'd like some extra flashy effect (confetti? :P) when you get a new coin. I guess the silver/gold coins sparkle when you get them the first time, but if there is some effect for ordinary coins I must have missed it..
I wish there were some days in the year where all the limited edition Kao coins would be available. Maybe the first day of every month or something. I'm only missing one (gold/ultra rare from the sakura series) and it's frustrating as I won't be able to get it until April next year.
Thanks for the idea. I am thinking about different ways to make them available, and I agree that *something* needs to change. I don't want to rush into it, but something will happen!
Limited edition coins are now available on Saturday and Sunday of each week! There are no raised percentage rates, but it will select from the entire pool of coins.
Did you change anything with the drop rates since you added the pity counter? I've just suddenly started getting multiple gold coins per day in the last few days, which seems weird.
