Forums - Words definitions from EDICT outdated?

Recently I've noticed that many word's meaning here on renshuu doesn't match up with the ones on jisho.org, even though they use the same dictionary as revealed by the "About" page here on renshuu, so the past few days I've been sending corrections to make all the words I find conform to jisho and thus to the JM-Edict.
I'm imagining that me doing this could be seen as spam and also take a lot of time from whoever has to go trough all of my reports.

I was wondering, wouldn't be possible to import the current JM-Edict version into the site and rectify all the words at once?
If not, is it ok if I keep reporting them manually?

It's not updated automatically, so I'll need to go in and make sure it matches. Will try to do this soon!

I just updated a whole ton of definitions. Kept a backup of the old ones just in case. Look around, see if it seems better to you.

Well, this actually lead me to ralize that Yomichan dictionary wasn't in fact updated, was more updated than previous renshuu (when I opened the topic) but now it falls behind. I tried to import an updated dictionary into it, but it doesn't want to work...
So now I'm on firefox using rikaichamp, which seems to have an updated dictionary, the only problem is it fails to properly highlight words on renshuu.
I've informed the creator: ->  https://github.com/birtles/rik...
Though I thought to mention this here too, because I am not sure if the problem is on rikaichamp side, or is renshuu doing some magic so that rikaikun and yomichan can work properly on it :S

Whatever you did, most of the user-added or updated terms have changed or disappeared. Any way we can get the definitions back?

Ah, I guess this is why I've noticed definitions changing recently! It confused me a bit since some of the 'keywords' I was relying on to tell similar terms apart weren't doing the trick any more ;-)
It would be great to know is this is expected to stay as it is, or if you're planning to keep tweaking?  I'm happy either way but I'd just like to be sure.

So that's why the definitions are now lacking? For example, さん got changed to just "younger sister", and other terms have similarly changed to have oversimplified definitions.

Haha wow, I just had a surprise when came up in a quiz; the new definition is: international; diplomatic intercourse
At least it's never boring!

Would this also explain why I have a quiz item for かわ meaning discarded mah jong tiles suddenly, when I could swear I've never heard of that before?

that's odd, I checked on jisho and indeed is under "Other forms" for , while the discarded mahjong tile should be ホー (though now that I notice, that has かわ as well under other forms)

8n05icoqkxjt6pngpxr7aectq.png So that's seems something that can be adjusted, since is working correctly on jisho.
Regarding the other terms changing, @htatsuha I've searched for さん on goo and kotobank and I found no entry for it in there as well...what is missing exactly?
Also I think you are ignoring all the terms that got improved, to randomly mention one.
Old definition was :freeze (ex. program, food, etc...)
New is: freezing (e.g. water); freezing (prices, wages, assets, etc.), moratorium, suspension (e.g. investment)
The new one seems better to me.

Anyway I tought several people could end up annoyed with the changes in "keyword" confusing them during the quizzes, but I think overall is a win because of the majority of updated definitions.
If reverting back to the old dictionary would be the choosen route in this case, would be possible for renshuu to "host" several dictionary versions and let the individual user choose which one to use?

Updating isn't the problem. The issue is that users have spent nearly a decade shaping and updating the dictionary, now all that work is gone.

Take the word "black" for instance. The new "updated" definition is just that, black. It used to have usage definitions specifying name, color, beverage/drink choices, humor, and more. How is that an improvement?

And as you have found, some terms are incorrect.  Fixing it will take a long time.

I see your point. Would be cool if it was possible to separate your changed definitions from the old dictionary and send them to JM-Edict to be merged into the dictionary, so that not only would solve this problem but also improve jisho.org

All of the data is still in there, backed up, and if I need to make a temporary revision so I can make a better update, I can.

Additionally, I already found some instances where some of the additions did not make it in, so I have plans to fix that later today.

As a stop-gap measure, I have reverted a number of definitions in which the newer definition was shorter than the older. I would say 99% of the updates I've made over the years have been to increase the clarity of a definition with a longer, more detailed meaning.

I am extremely embarrassed to say that a feature I thought I had put in many years ago does not exist, and is being put in now. Specifically, there was not an explicit mark put on revisions to definitions to say "this is better than edict, do not overwrite with edict."

Please report specific instances that you find, and I will see how best to approach them - if they need to be done one-by-one, or if a large-scale approach is needed.

Definetely some manual corrections need to be done.
For instance, which just popped up during my quiz, on Edict vs Renshuu

Edict: inspection, examination, checking
Renshuu: inspection, examination, checking, checking (e.g. an object, in the sense of checking every part for defects)

I mean, if you ask me the Edict one is better, the one modified on renshuu is not adding anything while being "noisy".

Now about 70% of the terms on the site are appearing as unknown. Even basic ones like い、い. I think my entire JLPT schedule had the little red u beside every term.

No user-added terms are appearing in the dictionary. I know many were there before the update.

Some of the edict definitions are too simplistic IMHO. In the example above, I prefer the Renshuu one. More clarification and usage information is always helpful.

Mh...that come off wrong. I am in favor too of extra clarification and more in depth explanation, I just wish there was a "footnote" or "toggleable" area for it because I don't like the repeating of a same word on a quizzed term, like "checking, checking.." above, or long explanations (like the one for り on Edict or the one in parenthesis above) during the quiz. But I think I'm getting off topic lol.  To each one is own :)

I DID implement a tracking medium for updated definitions, I knew it. I really thought I had dreamt up something I had done years ago. Reverting any definitions that were already marked as updated through renshuu.
