Hi! Apologies if this has been mentioned before, I did search but couldn’t see anything.

I found WaniKani before Renshuu, and I honestly prefer it for learning Kanji. It has a set order to learning, includes stories and mnemonics to help you remember terms, and because of the structure it doesn’t feel like it requires a whole load of set up or input on my part - I do the lessons in their order, I review, I remember.

Since WaniKani provides the API key it is really simple to link it to other things. Right now, I’m doing WaniKani every day (don’t want reviews to pile up), then I pop over to Renshuu and I either have to go update what I’ve learned, or accept some repetition (honestly, I have some issues with the ‘study’ aspects and how some things are taught then quizzed that I need to articulate better at some stage). It’s also a little...demoralising? to come over and see Kanji learning piling up like I’m doing no work there.

It would be wonderful to be able to input my WK API key, and have Renshuu automatically update the Kanji/vocab I know relative to that, maybe with the Kanji study options over here being to only include words from current levels or older levels, all levels, or not at all. Right now, Renshuu is a bit of an afterthought to me - I have a Duolingo streak of 571 days so I’m not about to stop that (it’s not an amazing learning platform IMO, but I’ve gained a lot of basic knowledge from it that has helped now I’m upping my game), I don’t want WaniKani reviews to pile up (won’t drop this because I think the teaching method is great, clear, excellent for reading Kanji), I then have KaniWani which uses the WK API info to quiz me on my WK terms the other way around I.e. it gives me the English and I give the Gana (and can draw the Kanji if I want on paper) and this helps solidify the initial learning and my ability to picture the actual Kanji. Usually, if I’m still up for studying after Duo and WK (plus watching a show in JP no subtitles for a bit of immersion), I’ll do KaniWani or come here. Because KW is a supplement to WK I don’t mind letting that pile up a bit. I’m not always up to or able to do more, and I’d love for Renshuu to be somewhere I actively visit to do lessons, and I really think some integration would help, so updating things isn’t just another chore that I’m doing over learning.

Apologies if anything is unclear. I love the games, and the learning involved when finding words for Shiritori, trying to find terms that utilise part of another word and kind of working back and forth between En and Jp to find a word that exists solely as Kanji (maybe I do it a weird way, but I enjoy it). I also like the crosswords, though they’re a bit overwhelming at first, much easier on the site with the dictionary than in the App. I’d just really like the option to have the tools I’m using work together. Thanks for your time!

Thanks for the detailed post. I'd definitely be interested in providing some kind of link up. It's a bit hard at the moment to see what my time will look like over the next couple of months, but if you are interested in digging deeper into this discussion, I can get a better feel for what would have to be done, and how much time it would take. Until that point, it would be difficult to commit and say "yes, I can definitely add this."

So let me throw a big question at you, and we can continue from there. Please keep in mind that I'm not really familiar with their API or their system in general.

1. When broken down into atomic units of information, what exactly would you like to see as importable into renshuu's study history for a user?

Bear in mind I’m always happy to help where I can, I’ve still got the American/English spelling list/resource on my ToDo list :) Just been a bit busy. Have you used WaniKani before? Just lets me know how much I need to explain :) might still end up going on a bit, but it’s helpful to know.

I have not! I made renshuu so many years ago precisely for me to use to study, and by the time a lot of the other "big players" came out, I was no longer studying actively.
