Forums - More options for mnemonics

I think it would be really helpful if we had the option to put mnemonics in the “kanji summary” screen for when you get a question right or wrong (it typically only includes the kanji, radical name, onyomi/kunyomi readings, and meanings but not the mnemonics). In my experience, it only displays the mnemonics when you get something like a definition—> kanji question wrong and even then it only displays the mnemonic(s) for the kanji that you selected that was incorrect and not the kanji that was the correct answer.

This may be different for mnemonics that you create yourself though, as I have only ever used the mnemonics created by other users. It may also work differently on the website (I use the iOS app).

I would also suggest the ability to save mnemonics made by other users that we find the most helpful (maybe using a “star” button?) so that whenever we look up a kanji or a word that uses that kanji or when we get a question wrong or right when studying we can see the mnemonic that helps us remember the kanji the most. I personally find that I work the best with mnemonics when I’m constantly reminded of them, I have a hard time remembering it when I only see it once, and I’m sure that many others would feel the same because I have seen other Japanese learning apps that do the same thing with mnemonics (showing it everywhere whenever you get a question wrong, etc.)

Sorry if that was a little long, I hope that this was clear enough :)

Thanks for the suggestions!

1. The "after a question" part sounds like a good setting-level feature.

2. Instead of a star (which would require another visual element), what about all the ones that you have voted up?

Thank you for the quick reply! In response to your second point, you’re right, I think that just upvoting the mnemonic(s) would be better :)

I'll have #2 added ..probably when you read this reply. As to #1, sometime in the next week or two (depending on how quickly I put out a lot of other smaller issues).

I love this a lot. Also, would it be possible to show your own mnemonic first in the summary screen? That's currently how the dictionary is laid out, but it would be really helpful to have it that way for the kanji quizzes too.

Which screen do you mean by summary screen?

I don't know the name, but after you answer a quiz question, it will show you the result (e.g. if you got it correct, the dictionary setting, etc). I have the mnemonics setting to show up in the dictionary and in lessons/quizzes. But the mnemonics on the lesson page don't have mine on top (it is whatever is the most upvoted mnemonic, I think) and the quizzes don't show my mnemonic, or if it does I don't know where it is. It would be really helpful to have my mnemonic listed on the lesson page rather than someone else's since that's how I learned the character, and to see it in the quiz results page.

I completely forgot about those! I changed it so the ordering of the mnemonics is the same as those in the dictionary.

Love using the mnemonics, and I use them a lot. I'd like to suggest a possible small user interface improvement:

During mnemonic creation, it would be wonderful to be able to select a range of strokes when coloring in the kanji. For example, clicking on stroke number one, holding down the shift key and clicking on stroke number five would color in all five strokes. Or some other way. This would be very helpful, especially for kanji with a large number of strokes. Thanks!
