Here's what they look like:
These new vectors, when used, each effectively collapses two vectors into one.
Consider the following two terms:
漢字
たくさん
With the current (non experimental) settings, if you have kanji > meaning and kana > meaning vectors on, you would get
漢字 - 2 vectors - kanji > meaning, kana > meaning
たくさん - 1 vector - kana > meaning
This is often not ideal, as most learners are happy with a single kanji > meaning vector for the term 漢字
However, if you have the following vector activated: kanji > meaning, you would get
漢字 - 2 vectors - kanji > meaning
たくさん - CANNOT BE STUDIED
Now, consider using the new vector: Kanji/kana > meaning. You would get
漢字 - 1 vector - kanji > meaning
たくさん - 1 vector - kana > meaning
In other words, this new vector will use kanji in the question if it is available, but otherwise will use kana.
This is a rather large change (internally), so please report any issues that you see come up - either with the quizzing, the lists of terms or numbers shown on the schedule summary, or anything else.
This is great! Though sometimes some kanji words still appear in kana, but I can say it happens much more rarely now.
Do you mind tossing me a few quiz reports when that happens? It's the ? button at the top of the site/app, then go to "quiz report" in the panel that pops up.
You don't need to do it for *all* of them, just a few.
Sorry, can't seem to find that. The only ? button I see is the "Help and Support" one, and it has no quiz report.
It is in the Help and Support - you should see a Contact Us button if you go there right now. If you, however, go there while in a quiz, there will be a new button next to it for reporting quizzing issues.
Well I did that but it just sent my text report, idk if it automatically adds the quiz as you wanted.
It does :). I haven't checked those reports yet, but I'll do so soon! Thank you :)
As the image above show, despite having the vector to level 7 the Mastery % is only 38%, but the "kanji/kana->meaning" is going to ask me always the kanji only for it, so that display will get maxed at 50%.
I suggest changing how it works so that it tracks only 1 of the 2 vectors and thus becomes able to show 100% when the Kanji->meaning for 濠 in the example above reaches max level
Found another problem but I can't be 100% sure is related to the experimental feature.
I've just added the word 岩場 to my Main Schedule, but it is not showing under "Unstudied terms", in fact the section is not even appearing.
Also the schedule is showing the same number for the total number of term in the schedule and the studied terms, which is 5316, but it is wrong because they should be different by 1.
Also in the video below I've opened both lists, and although 岩場 appears as part of the words in the schedule, it doesn't appear under "studied", so the "unstudied" list not appearing is a bug.
The first issue has been fixed, and the changes will go online later today.
As to the second, it looks like the term made its way into the quizzes and is appearing correctly, right?
If it happens again, let me know and hopefully I'll be able to check it before it gets studied.
actually, a strangeness happened today but I "fixed" it myself before reporting it or reading this message.
Essentially I've added 告白 to my Main Schedule, and although the term wasn't Blocked, it got added to the "hidden terms" (first "bug") - it was the only term in that list.
I've clicked on the Hidden Terms list of the schedule, but it would bring up 0 term, giving the "red kao message" saying that no terms where in that list (second "bug")
So then I went in the dictionary, Blocked 告白 and then Un-Blocked it, which moved it into the "unstudied terms" list and fixed the problem
If if happens with another vocab, I'll let you know immediately :)
Thanks! If it does happen again, in addition to letting me know, I'm curious as to if it is a word that you've studied before, or if it's new - although I'm not able to replicate the bug yet, that may be part of the issue.
I've been exclusively doing the 'kana/kanji>meaning' vectors, but am now using both combined vectors. Is there a good way to set the ~5k 'new' terms to a higher mastery level so that I don't have to go through all the early stages?
The Japanese Index is built exactly for actions like this! (Under Learn)
Add words > then choose your schedule
Under Actions, go to Mastery Level, then you can instantly update one or more vectors to a new level.
I sent another report in, please don't mind that, everything works now. Turns out I accidentally switched the settings in quiz and it started showing kana again, now I think it only shows kanji where kanji should be, thank you!

Just happened now, I've went to add 山岳 which was marked as "already studied" but was not in any of my schedule, I think it was in a schedule or a lesson I had deleted long ago - so I've unchecked the "lightbulb" and clicked the plus to add it to my Main Schedule, and it was added to the "hidden terms" although it wasn't blocked, and if you access the "hidden term" list it doesn't show.
you can check my Main Schedule now to see it in person, I won't fix it yet :)
Not sure if this is the intended behaviour, but the new vectors don't respect my global setting for how to view kanji I don't know.
If there are any unknown kanji in a term, they appear in kana instead of as a grey kanji with furigana like I've set. Is it just falling back to testing the kana vector instead of the kanji vector if I haven't studied the kanji yet? In which case, will learning that kanji later affect the mastery of terms that were already studied with the blended vector but were previously in kana?
That sounds a bit off. The way it *should* be working is that if it would have been available for a kanji<> vector in the past, it would get kanji. Otherwise, it would be kana.
So what I'd like to get is an in-quiz report of one or more of the terms with the issue. :)
Currently what I've been experiencing is for example with a term like 威力, I know the second kanji but not the first. In questions with the blended vectors it will appear as い力 instead of 威力 with furigana over the 威. It's consistent any time I get a term with unknown kanji in it, so I should be able to send in several reports when I do quizzes tomorrow.
I get the feeling that it is an unrelated bug, possibly coincidental. Just so we can speed up the debugging, please do the following:
1. When you see a term with it (just one is fine), go ahead and open up the dictionary immediately, look up the term, and block it. Do not answer the question.
2. Let me know which question type it was (vector), and I'll recreate a second schedule in your account with that single term in it in order to reproduce the issue.
