Most Japanese names, long or short, are written in Kanji. There is even an approved list of characters that can be used. Exceptions have become more common with Western influence since WW2, so it is now not so unusual for a name to be written in kana. Many pop stars use hiragana only for their (stage) name.

I think most Japanese first and last names tend to be around 2-3 kanji each, but shorter or longer names do happen.

e.g. The former prime minister Shinzo Abe is : (Abe) (Shinzo).

The names can be super tricky, because the pronunciation can be either onyomi or kunyomi and often are rare readings for the kanji.
