Since I have swathes of time at work I translate my school lunch menu and ingredients. It just occurred to me I could put it up on here each day as maybe someone may have a modicum of interest. If you feel I have made mistakes in translation, have at it.

It reminded me that when I was earlier visiting japan when my vocabulary wasn't that good, I was still translating kanji as if it were chinese, the carrots in the menu is interpreted as "ginseng" in chinese. We were wondering where was the ginseng in as we stirred through the ingredients of the bento set.

I hope all of my translations are correct. Sometimes it's hard to get an exact translation. If you are from China, jiaozi(?) and mabodoufu should be fine.

The translations are alright, I think. Ingredients translation is a big pain as each region name them differently. I had to dig into wikipedia to find out the regional name variations. I think that should be the same whether it is in english, japanese, or chinese (or Korea?). A good example of naming confusion is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
I'm of the ethnic group, but I'm not from China. Most of the Japanese chinese (中華) cuisine like ramen, gyoza, and 麻婆tofu names, are still relatively close in meaning and naming. Daikon 大根, is one of those that are different. Known as 菜头 in some other places in asia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/....

I had issues over the last week. The IT guy whose router I run my internet off was on a school trip, and I had use all of my 20GB over Golden Week so I had no internet. I read instead. Anyhow, I digress. Today's lunch

In my experience as a teacher here I find that to be evident in so many students. They can do maths that is well past what I can understand and science that is impressive. It comes to pointing to Fiji on a map or talking about the pros and cons of nuclear energy and they always come up short.
Curry is the best. I remember when I worked on a skifield in Tochigi in 1993. We used to sneak down in the middle of the night to the kitchen and get big bowls of nice hot curry. Magic. I'll check out the curry manga. At he moment my manga is Golden Kamui.
Here we are in June. The temperature is still dipping below 10 degrees at night which is showing my garden not much love. It should be alright, but my super hot peppers are not going to like it. しょうがない。
One of the books I'm reading at the moment is Murakami's 'Kafka on the Shore'. No spoilers cause I'm only halfway through, but it is out there. Loving it.
