I started using renshuu about a week or two ago and do like it so far, but sometimes I get quizzes with words in them that I don't know yet, and there's no definition shown for them. When I tap them afterwards, they're marked as "I know this" even though I'm pretty sure I didn't study them yet and didn't mark them manually.
Did I do something wrong when signing up that caused those words to be considered known?
Is there a place where I can see all items marked this way so that I can check and unmark those that I don't actually know?
Thanks!
To check which terms are marked known, go to the Japanese Index under the Tools menu. For +words, add My Words and/or whatever schedules/lessons you think might have extra known words in them, and under Filter select About Me>I know this. All of your terms flagged "I know this" will be listed, and if there are any in there you don't know you can use the actions bar to mark them unknown.
Terms are automatically marked known the first time they're studied, so any term that you've submitted an answer for in a quiz will appear as known in the dictionary afterwards.
If you don't want to learn new terms you can set that option in your schedule settings. If you DO want to learn new terms but you're being given new terms in quizzes that weren't on the intro page, that sounds like a bug, but it's also possible that in your account settings you accidentally set your pre-Renshuu study slider too high for your level and you have extra known terms should be reset with the Japanese Index.
If you ever see anything in a quiz that you feel is "off", don't hesitate to tap the ? button, then the quiz error button. I'm happy to look into anything strange that you have run into.
Sorry for taking so long for getting back to this. I suppose that I had the slider too far to the right when I signed up, well, I'll get to known all the words eventually. In the meantime, I'll just un-check the words I don't actually know after solving the quiz, it's usually not a blocker to solving them if I'm missing a word.
Using the Japanese index is a nice suggestion, but going through he list is rather tedious (not much you can do about that *lol*), and also, the action bar only seems to allow to reset the "I know this" state for all currently shown items. There's neither a "I know this" flag on the individual items, nor is there a some kind of checkbox to limit the action to the selected items. So unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be an option for me.
It definitely should do it not for the currently shown ones (as that can only show a few dozen at a time), but for everything that matches the filters.
If you'd like to show me a screenshot of the top-half of the index (with your selections), I can jump in and try it myself and make sure it is working properly.
Ah, yeah, I meant all items matched by the filter, I just tried too hard to avoid using the term "selection". The point was that I don't want to reset everything (right?), And I can't come up with a filter setting for "things that are unknown to me but were marked as known to me because I set the slider to the wrong setting".
Or did I just misunderstand the whole approach of using the Japanese Index?
It is not able to distinguish between different types of "I know this" - that is, things set by a slider, or things you've marked with the light bulb. This data does exist in the database, so if you'd like, I can wipe this data out for you.
For the record, there are about 900 terms which were marked as known via the settings, and never studied in a quiz. There's only about 25 instances of you marking something known with the light bulb.
So, if you'd like me to wipe out the "I know this" status of those 900 terms, I'd be happy to do so.
Ah! Choosing the "Never studied" filter did the trick. I had tried the "Mastery" filter before, but setting the range to "0-0%" didn't work as expected (I don't recall the exact problem), and then I gave up, obviously that was a bit premature. Thanks a lot for the help from both of you :-)
