I don’t really remember why I chose to learn Japanese. All i know is that I started to just barely learn some basic words during the pandemic (aaaand I wasn’t even pronouncing them right ) I decided to keep going as I started to learn more about Japan and Japanese culture (which has always intrigued me.) Since I already have a strong foundation of another language, the career of a translator/interpreter (or any other job that requires more than one language to help others who can’t speak/understand it) seemed like a pretty good choice! I am trying my best to get in practice every day, but I take my time so I don’t overwhelm myself and “flip-out.” Let me know if any of you want to use your Japanese skills for a job!
I wanted to watch my anime without subtitles as they where pretty bad at Netflix. That's was literaly the main objective. It's still my main goal, but I also love to study almost every day and I never kept up with anything this long in my entire life ( voluntarily). Huge part thanks to this app. I even like to learn the Kanji. Who would ever think that was fun after reading all the doom scenario's on the internet.
If I'm at level N3 I plan to study Chinese and I'm told Korean is for free than, if you know Japanese and Chinese, so that one's in the planning too. I'm still debating on the language after that. Arabic is pretty cool too and not as hard as Japanese, but Spanish is good to have. I find that when you study one language all the others become easier and all my French from high school comes back to me too.
I grew up surrounded by Japanese speakers, so I was always convinced that I knew the language better than I actually did. I eventually took Japanese in high school and found out that most of my Japanese was old man slang, child words and things people only said on TV.
I got from N5 up to N3 in high school, but then stopped in college. I'm aiming for N2 now for work!
@yukisane1 I love light novels, too! I remember in one boring class in high school, the guy next to me would read a stack of light novels and just leave the ones he was done with on the floor until the end of class. I would pick them up and make my way through them one or two books behind him, which is how I got through most of Sword Art Online.
I originally wanted to learn Japanese simply because it's an original language for a lot of content that I'm checking on internet (anime, youtube videos, music, games, etc.). The thing that keeps me motivated is the fact that I'm genuinely having fun just from learning something interesting. Also it makes my day whenever I can casually understand what is written/said on Japanese in places outside of renshuu, even if this is something very basic. Also I have some experience with languages (I can speak freely on 3 languages for now), and learning English was the best decision in my life, I met so many amazing people and found a lot of great content because of this. So I expect something similar from nihongo too.

Waa that’s crazy!! Keep going you’ve made so many efforts!
I too want to learn Mandarin after my JLPT N3 (or maybe 2 I heard after learing mandarin japanese becomes easier somehow) !! And I’ll defintly try some Arabic too, the sound of the language sounds soo beautiful! (+ i got a lot of friends who speaks Arabic it’s easier for me to engage emotionally with the language)
If you ever found yourself needeing someone to practice your french, send me a message I’m a native French speaker haha
Absolutly Spanish is a good choice I’m also learning kt but with a teacher

Waa what languages do you speak??
I feel you!! When I read a book/ watch a video/ anime and understand it or at least 70% I simply feels so good inside.
Simply satisfied of all my efforts! It’s the best motivation for me

NOOO IT’S LIKE YOU HAD TO DO EVERYTHING FROM THE START ARGHHHH
But Woww N5 to N3 is impressive congratulations!!
I do appreciate Sword art online a lot too but now Classroom of the Elite is currently my goal wish me good luck! !
But beside of school how did you studied your japanese like that?? That’s incredible!
@yukisane1 Thanks, that would be cool. My French is like very low level. I can make basic sentences. The hard part is also that it is somehow stored in the same place as my Japanese, so every sentence I try to make I mix it up haha. Also because I know 'comprandre' ' crois' and 'pense', but not the word for 'to know' And I bump into that a lot. (I just looked it up and it turns out I did know it, but forgot the meaning haha)
The other day i met two ppl from France at the station and I tried to be kind when leaving so I wished them a 'Bon travaille' instead of 'Bon voyage' I really hope they got the clue that I was mixing up travel and travaille, but I felt pretty stupid afterwards. 😂😅

I speak Ukrainian, Russian and English. Understanding "at least 70%" of entire anime/video/book is very very far goal for me right now, but I'll get there, since process of learning is part of the fun too.
Wow, impressive. Especially Russian/English. I took one look at the alphabet and was immediately discouraged. The letters are the same shape, but diff meaning. I don't know anything about Ukrainian, but my guess is it is close to Russian. Bit like German vs Dutch.
My motivation is that I want to be able to speak multiple languages. I chose japanese to start off because the learning resources for this languages works best for my adhd

Don't know how similar German vs Dutch are, not very knowledgeable in this sphere. Ukrainian has some similarities, but they are mostly different and just sharing majority of letters, some sounds, words and grammar, like majority of other slavic languages. As example, despite being my native language, I struggled with it decently at school because my surroundings were speaking mostly Russian and practicing Russian didn't compensate for lack of practice on Ukrainian, due to how different they are.
About alphabet - was one of my reasons why I decided to go with Japanese lol. Moving from Ukrainian&Russian to English was fun, even basics like alphabet are completely different, so I decided to continue on this path and chose something completely different again, instead of learning other slavic language or Spanish, German, etc.

I love CotE! Such a fun story, and it's got so many good conversation words and good language for the workplace/school, too! I'm sure you'll be reading through it in no time!
Aside from school I just made sure to talk to a lot of Japanese friends. It's like going to the gym; we always get better the more we speak it, but we have to speak it to get better. If you're not in a place with Japanese people, you can join an online community and talk to them there!
I was really into anime as a teen and, like a lot of other people, the thought of being able to effortlessly understand shows without subtitles was super appealing.
Now these days though as an adult, I honestly just really enjoy the challenge of the language and the opportunity to connect with people on their level. Reading Japanese in the wild without translation is the best feeling:)

Ohhh Waaw I heard the Russian alphabet was really different from the English one ( if I’m being ignorant feel free to educate me)! Do you often find similarities between the languages you know??
Keep it you’ll be there sooner than you think and you’re right the fun makes it 100x easier to actually comprehend the language!!

that’s interesting !! But how? How those it works with your ADHD?

Thanks a lot!! Now you’ve motivated me even more! I’ll definitely buy the whole CotE bye byee my savings
That’s a good point I’ll really try to speak often!! I’ve also started a sort of journal where I write my thoughts down! It’s so fun and I just can’t get bored of it

I know reading and understanding it feels different!! What do you usually read? Novels? Light novels? News?
But I found you really admirable! You’re learning to connect with other’s and that’s exactly why I found it admirable!! You’ll make so many people’s day!! Good luck

Fighting
Yeah alphabet is different. English uses latin letters, Russian/Ukrainian - cyrillic. Except similarities between Ukrainian and Russian - no, almost no similarities. Which is fun for me because it makes me feel that I learned a lot more.
