What my motivation is, is knowing that if I ever go to Japan, I can speak Japanese.

Wow, impressive. Especially Russian/English. I took one look at the alphabet and was immediately discouraged. The letters are the same shape, but diff meaning. I don't know anything about Ukrainian, but my guess is it is close to Russian. Bit like German vs Dutch.

Don't know how similar German vs Dutch are, not very knowledgeable in this sphere. Ukrainian has some similarities, but they are mostly different and just sharing majority of letters, some sounds, words and grammar, like majority of other slavic languages. As example, despite being my native language, I struggled with it decently at school because my surroundings were speaking mostly Russian and practicing Russian didn't compensate for lack of practice on Ukrainian, due to how different they are.

About alphabet - was one of my reasons why I decided to go with Japanese lol. Moving from Ukrainian&Russian to English was fun, even basics like alphabet are completely different, so I decided to continue on this path and chose something completely different again, instead of learning other slavic language or Spanish, German, etc.kao_sorry.png

Ahh, thanks for the explenation. I had no idea Ukrainian and Russian where so different. To me it all sounds the same (I know that's more due to a lack of knowledge on my part than anything else). Slavic languages are very unfamiliar to me and the representation on TV in any slavic language is next to non-excistend (if you don't count in the news but tbh official speached never sound like how normal ppl talk anyway (Thank God for that 😂😂🙏)).

Cool that exactly the thing that discouraged me to take on Russian, enticed you to take on Japanese. I love a new perspective.

Ohhh Waaw I heard the Russian alphabet was really different from the English one ( if I’m being ignorant feel free to educate me)! Do you often find similarities between the languages you know??

Keep it you’ll be there sooner than you think and you’re right the fun makes it 100x easier to actually comprehend the language!!

Fightingkao_punch.png

Yeah alphabet is different. English uses latin letters, Russian/Ukrainian - cyrillic.
Except similarities between Ukrainian and Russian - no, almost no similarities. Which is fun for me because it makes me feel that I learned a lot more. kao_yoroshiku.png

Ohh I learned something today thank you!! Good luck in your learning journey!! kao_guts.png

Hi ! What motivates me is the thirst of learning.

I was watching anime before, and when the lockdown came i had nothing to do except watching some more, but i didn't really learn anything from the school anymore and i got bored because i enjoy learning new things every day.

I thought one day "i want to understand without the subtitles !"

And so i started based on this motivation. I learned a few words first, and how to introduce myself, and then i learned both alphabets. I started learning more vocabulary and more sentence building and grammar, a few kanjis... But soon the school started again, and i kind of suspended my japanese learning when it did.

However, now i decided to start again, at the intermediate level i had left behind. My motivation this time is no longer anime. I just want to keep going, even though i have school and a lot of work. I want to prove to myself that i can manage it all, and i want to have this "special skill" that others don't learn at school !!

Just by how you introduced this reply I can see that you are the type of person who won’t give up that easily!

I got the feeling you’ll made it! Keep fighting! Everyone here is backing you and wishing you only success!!

I’m sure you’ll manage just fine! You probably understand most of your favourite anime right? I’m roothing for you!kao_punch.png

I started studying Japanese purely on a whim, I didn't even know about anime/manga until I was fairly deep in my studies. The more I had learned, the more it felt like I was getting let "in" in a big secret. Preparing for a trip to Japan really motivated me to learn. When I came back home, my motivation wore off, until I found the joy of manga, as well as the excitement of creating my own stories in Japanese. Another trip to Japan lead me to study to N3 level, and now I'm discovering the joy of light novelsand audio dramas.

I'm not sure which one is my real motivation. It's either I enjoyed having something to look forward to (I looked forward to learn new vocabulary everyday) or I wanted to know what people say in Japanese variety show, I wanted to know why they laugh what's so funny, etc.

1. I really like their culture— their anime, light novels, shogi, calligraphy, and the like. Now imagine how much more good shit I can enjoy if I understand the language instead of waiting for translations...!
2. It's surprisingly similar to my native language

3. I get to avoid the dread of feeling utterly useless and unproductive

I like Japanese culture - their architecture, their costumes, their food, aesthetics, etc. And while I am not a very big manga/anime fan (I only read and watch a few) it still motivates me to learn. Another motivation for me is that I plan to go to Japan some time next year.

I started learning Japanese because I have Japanese relatives and although most of them can speak basic English (one of them can speak fluently) its good to break language barriers as they're annoying and it'd be really fun to be bilingual! Also my mum is from Japan so she'd probably appreciate me speaking to her in her native language!kao_heart.png

Ohh and I would also like to understand things like anime, vocaloid etc

This is really solid motivation, and similar to what drives me. You can’t fully participate in your family life if someone always has to be translating for you. がんばれ!

what is shogi??

Ooh thank you!!

A manga I read a long time ago was about this game. "March comes in like a lion" is the name of the manga in english (if my memory is right). It was really an interesting read since I never hears about Shogi in my life before!

soon i will be able to play japanese otome games that were never released in other countries. seeing the large list of what i want to play and hearing familiar words while playing the remaining translated games with japanese voices keeps me motivated

Mostly I want to learn Japanese to play untranslated video games. Nerdy, I know!

Another reason is because my uncle, who died seventeen years ago, was an English teacher in Japan. I want that connection to him. I'm not religious but I believe in an afterlife and something in particular happened a few months ago that strongly adds to my motivation.

I know some people want to learn Japanese for anime but I'm autistic and have sensory processing issues so I frequently can't even understand English shows without subtitles so that's not one of my reasons lol

I had a lot of changing reasons actually haha! I would leave it at times, i think the first time i thought about it was because i was sort of worried for privacy err

i remember being in public place writing diary and thinking "i write it in english but some know it too... ah wish to write in less popular langueage" a language with hieroglyphs seemed perfect cause you cant google translate it teehee (you can actually draw some kanjis but it seems its hard to see them without knowing the parts )

Then i wanted to read dazai in original. Now i think i just like the way kanji look and stuff xd
