I am watching a Chinese cooking serie on Netflix with Japanese subtitles. (The more honest version is I'm watching ppl cook Chinese dishes while listening to Chinese sounds and trying to recognize words in Japanese subs)

But somtimes words in Japanese are displayed with dots above the 'letters'. Comparible to stacatto notation above notes, for those who are familiar with music annotation. I was wondering what it means?

This is the Japanese equivalent of underlining. It is often used for emphasis.
