I've heard なにしろ is more emotional.

I've heard なにしろ can be replaced with とにかく, but the other way around is not always the case.

I've also read this slightly contradictory answer: https://hinative.com/questions...

Is the Reason Rule in the answer really correct? What are the actual differences between these two terms?

Notice that here are other similar terms like this that I'm also stuck with, like いずれにしても (anyhow, at all events, in any case, either way, anyway) and とにもかくにも (anyhow, anyway, somehow or other, generally speaking, in any case). Lol

Both とにかく and なにしろ mean anyway/anyhow. In that sense, they are fairly interchangeable, e.g.:

は(とにかく/なにしろ)できるだ。 = Anyway, she is a reliable person.

However, とにかく can also mean setting aside/regardless or more colloquially, really/definitely, like:

とにかくします。 = The truth will be discovered regardless.

とにかくだ。 = I'm really worried about his health.

In these sentences, it cannot be replaced by なにしろ.

なにしろ is used to stress a reason or cause. So なにしろいので emphasizes the cold more than とにかくいので does. But both are correct to say.

I assume that's what the linked answer was trying to get at...

And what about いずれにしても and とにもかくにも?

Same difference.

とにかく is a shortened form of とにもかくにも and the two are synonyms, along with ともかくも and ともかく. Being longer, it is much less common though.

いずれにしても, like しろ, only shares that first meaning, as do にしても, にせよ, どっちにしても and several others.
