can also be used by women/girls - especially recently, it seems to be used most often by either girls (maybe slightly more on the tomboy side of the scale) and なんとなく effeminite guys (or children of both genders)

As a young girl (anything under University age) I would agree, though I rarely hear any of my female students refer to themselves as  (I've heard it from one, but she's quite tomboy-ish). As a female at marrying age, I figure they would have grown out of it

well considering I have many elementary school students whose parents are in their 20s, I'd say "marrying age" and "under University age" aren't exactly mutually exclusive, depending on where you are!
