usually the noun/verb before にう (part A) is something in and of itself regarding change - words like わる、 etc.

I asked my Japanese boyfriend if ともない should be written as ない or い and he said the former which is the opposite of what is written in this grammar point. I think I will try to confirm with other native speakers. Has anyone else heard something similar?

Interesting - I see it written as う in two different dictionaries, and is also what is pulled up initially by my computer's IME. Definitely working checking, though.

Alright. I looked up a few Japanese websites online and confirmed with another native speaker and they seem to agree that the proper usage is い/って but some dictionaries and one PDF article I saw establish the fact that ない/なって can exist although it's now almost out of use. So what is written up in the grammar usage is correct. Sorry if I almost made that confusing! (The boyfriend seems to no longer have an opinion. Ha!)
