Looks like it could be translated by "that being said".

My understandig is as follows:

ところ can mean "matter, fact" and が can mean "but" when placed after the word.
So:
べるが = I eat but...
ところが = but the matter/fact (is)... which is equivalent to however

Yes, this is common, though not used as often as, say, でも or だけど. I'd say it's similar to "however" in English.
