Grammar usage notes

に is used to mark a specific time, event, or situation as a turning point that divides “before” and “after.” It emphasizes a transition or change following the specified point and is often used in contexts like life events, historical moments, or personal milestones. The structure is event/time/actionに、result/change/transition, and it works best when describing shifts in behavior, circumstances, or conditions. For example, に、きくわった (Marriage marked a major change in my life). Unlike をもって, which indicates the start or end of something formally, をに is more reflective, highlighting transitions or differences.

My textbook appears to have another usage of this grammar point that seems different from the definition here. はオリンピックをに、した。 Is the above compatible with the definition given here?

Yes, it's a similar meaning. Often, you can translate に as "beginning with" or "on the occasion of" - it's indicating the point in time at which something (usually, begins to) happen, or otherwise changes state.
