                    Some places separate the two usages, but they refer to the same idea:
よう = how / the way that
よう + によって = depending on how / the way that
The former is most often used with verbs of emotion (e.g. 怒る, 落ち込む) or verbs of change (e.g. 変わる, 痩せる), while the latter is more varied.
Here are 2 examples without によって from Renshuu's sentence library:
クリスは自分の変わりように、ベスが喜ぶだろうと自信がありました。 = Chris was confident that Beth would be delighted with his improvement.
