Just wanted to add that 新完全マスターN2文法 also provides an example sentence in which the てこのかた-part is not followed by a negative clause (this is actually the same sentence as the first user-sentence on this site)- so maybe this rule is not all too strict. (=^_^=)

Assuming that このほう and このかた are not interchangeable, then the first example sentence "離婚してこの方、ずっと彼に会っていません" has the wrong この方 linked up.
