Grammar usage notes

べて みません でした」Shouldn't this be translated, "I was sorry for having eaten it"? I'm thinking 「でした」 means the translation should also be past tense.

~てすみませんでした。 = Sorry for an action I’ve done
Use ~てすみません if the problem still continues.

You can use the less formal ~てごめん for both cases.

To apologize for having failed to do something, use ~なくて form.
早く 帰らなくて すみませんでした。
Sorry I didn’t leave (and go home) earlier.
