Linguistic note: Japanese does not traditionally have any diphthongs (or triphthongs). As an example, あおい is pronounced with all of its vowels distinct (monophthongs) instead of, for example, あ "flowing" into お. This is called vowel hiatus.

Of course, if you're speaking quickly (*enough), none of this really matters and you're free to beat me (physically) for ever mentioning this.

大きな & 小さな mean the same thing as 大きい & 小さい, respectively. The ~な versions just have a more literary or quaint feel, and are also often preferred for describing concepts.

There is no situation where 大きな / 小さな can be used that it would be incorrect to use 大きい / 小さい instead, but the ~な forms have restricted use and are not able to replace the ~い versions in many cases. As a learner, it's good to note that these forms exist, but it's safe to continue to use only 大きい / 小さい until you get a sense for what situations 大きな / 小さな are preferred in.

(かお) is the everyday word for "face", covering the physical face, expressions, identity, and social or metaphorical meaning. It's natural in conversation and appears in idioms like 顔が売れる or 顔を立てる.

顔面 (がんめん) refers more specifically to the face as a physical surface or anatomical area, often in medical or descriptive contexts, like 顔面にボールが当たった.

In short, is broad, social, and expressive, while 顔面 is physical, objective, and technical.

Note: When you turn 高い into the noun 高さ, it practically never means "expensive" by itself.

With 高い, the adjective carries multiple senses (high / tall / expensive), and context disambiguates.
With 高さ, that ambiguity is gone: the noun just means "degree / level / height", and the semantic load shifts to the noun it attaches to.
To express "expensiveness", you therefore need something like 値段の高さ (値段 = "price").

For example, このシャツの高さ refers to the shirt's physical measurements, not its price.

You can confirm this by checking the dictionary definition of 高さ, its example sentences, and most importantly—how natives actually use it.

Sounds similar to “too high”. As in: a structure or person = tall. A price = expensive. A sound = shrill. The image reminds me of several different things: 1. a tall building. 2. a rock cairn that won’t balance if it’s too high. 3. 少々(しょうしょう)> 少し > ちょっと

ちょっと is more of a spoken phrase than a written phrase. It can be rude in formal or business situations, especially when you're asking someone to do something.
For example 「ちょっと待ってください」(please wait a moment), it's like you're not taking their willingness to wait that seriously. In this case It's better to use 少し or even better 少々

There are a number of different words that refer to students in Japan. Let's cover them all!

We have the "definitive" series:
小学生 - elementary/primary school students
中学生 - middle school students
高校生 - high school students
大学生 - university students
大学院生 - graduate students

But, to the frustration of Japanese learners, there are also some more generic terms that appear to just mean student, but actually do not.

生徒 - typically refers to middle school or high school students, although I've heard it used casually towards primary students as well. (Formally, in educational literature, you'll see 児童 for primary level students)
学生 - despite this also meaning "student", it is almost always used to refer to university students.

For the "generic" student words, unless you have context or information that says otherwise, it is safe to assume that they are referring to the groups mentioned above, and not to all students in general.

Strangely, かばん appears out of nowhere in the Meiji period, first attested to a work from 1877, growing in popularity over the next decade until it displaced the previous term, 胴乱.

Possibly derived from Chinese 夾板/夹板 (jiābǎn) or 夾槾/夹槾 (“boards for pressing or holding things together”), modern Min Nan reading kiap-pán→キャパン→かばん, possibly via Dutch “kabas” with influence from French "cabas."

"Mannenhitsu" sounds like "man, neat hits".

Imagine someone using a fountain pen to write perfectly neat strokes, and you say, "Man, neat hits!", every time the pen glides smoothly on the paper.

The kanji for this word tells me a lot about how the Japanese might've reacted to the fountain pen when they were introduced to it. The idea of people being so enthralled over what was potentially to them a writing brush that lasted long enough to be a family heirloom (10,000 years) is so humorously wholesome to me.
