Another hypothesis sees it as a shift from はえで, as a compound of:

1.) 渡す is basically to 'hand over' :
- The focus is on the act of passing an item from one person to another. It's generally used when you encounter the situation face-to-face; meaning you are directly and physically passing an item to another person.
There isn't a strict rule regarding its direction, but it's more often used when the speaker is the one giving the item. It's due to it being a neutral verb.
When talking about receiving something, people usually choose a verb that sounds more acceptable like くれる. That stated the passive form 渡される is still fairly common.

2.) 送る is basically "send' :
- In contrast to 渡す this one is used indirectly. You are almost not physically directly handing something down to another person but sending it maybe through a mail, internet etc. but not face-to-face.
NOTE : The word 贈る is also read the same as おくる but this one is different and with a different kanji. It basically means giving an item to someone regardless of it being face-to-face or sending it through the mail, but it is primarily used when you give someone something as a gift or you bestow someone. I wouldn't state this おくる (贈る) to 'to send'.

3.) 届ける is "delivering" :
- This one is used when an item is being delivered from one place to its destined place. The focus is on the act of transporting. It doesn't matter whether you received it, prepared yourself, or you physically taking it to the destination.

4.) 寄越す is the least common from the lot. It is always from the perspective of the recipient and sounds less polite and comes handy in rough or casual situations but be careful about using it.
