I’ve experienced a few bugs on the app / mobile site so I just thought I’d report them.

ipadOS 16.2 / Safari

1. The website on the iPad browser isn’t playing audio.

2. When using a keyboard, eventually the space button starts to activate random keyboard shortcuts. I’ve attached the below video which shows that when I press space, instead of selecting the Kanji on the keyboard it opens up the side menu.

3. When using the keyboard the answer box isn’t centred. (As can be seen in the video above).

Thanks for the report. Let me ask you a few questions before I dive into this:

1. Since you specified the website, does that mean the audio is working in the app? Does the audio seem to be "dead" everywhere throughout the app? For example, in both quizzes and in the dictionary?

2. When you say shortcuts, are you referring to the menu popping out? It looks like you're using an external keyboard - does the same issue occur if you use the on-screen keyboard?

3. I might be looking at the wrong thing, but the question/answer panels seem to be centered to me (it's just that the menu is popping out, and that is giving the impression of it being offset?

It was just the website when browsing through Safari on the iPad, and it seemed to be dead everywhere. The app seemed to work just fine. Although after testing again this morning it all seems to be working okay, so it could have been an issue with my specific device. If it happens again I’ll post an update.

Yes the menu popping out. I am using an external keyboard, which seems to be the main issue. Its when I press the space bar to navigate selecting Kanji via the physical keyboard, the menu pops out (amongst other things happening).

3. I might be looking at the wrong thing, but the question/answer panels seem to be centered to me (it's just that the menu is popping out, and that is giving the impression of it being offset?

Apologies, by centred I mean it’s at the bottom of the screen (rather than the middle). This only seems to happen on the ipad app with a physical keyboard. If I use the on-screen keyboard, it almost pushes the answer up. (Shown below)

Thanks for the feedback. I will need to look into #2 - what keyboard do you happen to be using? I may need to buy one to figure this out for good.

#3 - this is a setting meant to make it easier to reach the various buttons with your fingers. You can turn it off my doing the following: tap the menu icon, then the settings button. Search for "reach" in the settings box, and turn off the setting that appears.

#3 - Thanks! This seems to resolve the issue!

#2 - I have an Apple Magic Keyboard, but they are fairly expensive so there is no pressure on this. Also I think I have worked out the issue! The left and right keys are defaulted to cycle through the top bar (settings, help, home and dictionary buttons). This means they don’t let you select Kanji properly with a keyboard or go left and right between characters within a text box. There is also no way of coming out of this (as far as I know). A demonstration can be shown here:

It’s hard to see, but at around the 6 second mark I am pressing the left key. Instead of going left within the text box, it is going left in cycling the top menu which starts the issue.

#4 - Type to Re-enforce Bug *New Issue*

I’ve found a new bug in the Renshuu ipad app where if you select get an answer incorrect and you use the ‘type to re-enforce’ setting. If you use the keyboard to progress once you’ve typed the answer it won’t progress forward properly. Here’s a video for demonstration:

On #4, I take it that you're pushing the enter/return key after typing, and that is not automatically sending the answer in? I presume then, that if you manually tap the button, that'll take?

#3 - It's frustrating that I cannot find any info on how to disable those keyboard bindings with the UI elements on the iOS app - I'm still looking into it, but am finding absolutely nothing.

#4 - Exactly yes. I’m pushing the return key and that seems to cause an error in processing. This happens on both the app and the website through safari. But yes if I manually tap the button it progresses forward so it’s not a blocker. :)

#3 - Very annoying! At the moment it’s not such a massive dealbreaker, I can just use the iPad friendly responsive site which works just as well!

#4 - The website does go to the next term, but then quickly backtracks to the previous page and displays the below message:

The key code for the return key is “13”.

Oh...that is not at all what I expected you'd say. Ok - let me try and replicate it. While I'm working on that - do you by chance recall (or can check on) what type of question comes next? As in, if you get an answer wrong, and you're reinforcing it, is the next question a multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, or both/either? I'm wondering if the fill-in-the-blank is conflicting with the next question's form.

Update: could not reproduce the behavior on Android + physical keyboard, nor on Safari on macOS. My bluetooth keyboard is buried in my luggage somewhere, so testing on iPad + keyboard will have to wait.

That being said, I did make a tiny change that may help. Give it a try! (Just in case you are already in the middle of a quiz when reading this, I'd close the app out and open it up again to make sure the change gets loaded in.

It was only on the iPad that this issue was happening, couldn't replicate it on Windows or Safari on MacOS. After testing however, whatever you did seems to have worked! No I press the enter key and it progresses as expected. Thanks for looking into it!

Great! So, I have (more long term than short) it noted on my to-do list to figure out a way to disable the keyboard navigation of the buttons/menu. I'll get it done eventually!

I think I was able to solve the keyboard issue! I have not yet officially released it yet - are you at all interested in testing it? All it requires is a 1st part Apple app called Test Flight which will let you install the unreleased version of Renshuu. I'd love to have you try it out!
