Are they interchangable or does it point out something specific?

I don’t know if this correct, but based on the kanji it would seem that 惚れる is more about falling in love, and 恋する is more about being in love.
The dictionary doesn’t really back this up though, so I may be overthinking it.

Hmm I thought the word ちる is falling in love but I think you're right about that.

given the English meanings

>to long for; to yearn after; to admire; to be attracted by

and the 1st Japanese definition here

https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/w...

I would say strong sense of attraction/infatuation is the closest concept. Usually the English translations of Japanese words encompasses the feeling of all the words used, not just one of them.

there are similar words like がれる and れる, as most advanced learners would suggest it is better to start getting into the habit of looking at example sentences to get a feel of how the word is actually used, like how everyone learns their native languages.

https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wi... not sure how true it is that にする is a 1-to-1 for falling in love

After reading lots of shojo manga *embarrassed cough* I think the main difference is that れる refers more the the act of falling in love, while する is more similar to just liking someone.

Lol! I've also read my fair share of shoujo manga/seen a few J-drama adaptions of shoujo manga, and am also somewhat across this area of vocabulary. (Also insert another *embarrassed cough* here .) I agree with the distinction you made. I always go きゃっ! when a character uses れる (rather than き etc) but it seems somewhat rare.

I actually prefer き because it seems more natural, but I do agree that れる feels more serious! Irl most Japanese don't talk about "falling in love" so I guess that's why it's more rare haha
