Is kao-chan a cat? On a kao-chan lesson she says she goes to a shrine with her family, but it's just her and some cats? I like conspiracy theories.
I’ll just say that I haven’t noticed a tail or any ears. Yet.
I think it's more like an adopted family. Since the orange cat found Kao I think they're like family now. (Plus Kao came out of an egg...)

I'm pretty sure cats don't hatch out of eggs, so Kao is probably not a cat. I assume Kao is supposed to represent a language learner's progression from being new (an 'egg') to acquiring enough knowledge to have a complex understanding of the language (as represented by the variants of the level 100 Kao.)
Kao-chan is kao-chan - it's one of a kind :)
Going on the egg tangent, Kao-Chan might be an egg white or egg yolk that became sentient...
