The link to this thread from the Experimental panel is broken, leads to an error page ):
Haven't dug too deep into this feature yet, but I noticed in the tag suggestion pop-up it specifies a "green" highlight even when colour-blind mode is on and replaces green with blue. There is also no indication that the list of tags is scrollable.
This is the error that pops up when using the link in the Experimental panel (Android).
There are a few entries in the tag list that aren't in alphabetical order.
Is there a way to view all of the terms with tags on them in the dictionary, or all the words with a certain tag? Seeing examples for each of them would help with getting a sense of what other kinds of words would fit.
Wait, are you still on the new.renshuu.org url? You can switch over to www.renshuu.org
All words with a tag is coming later, but definitely going to happen. Probably April. The number of terms with tags on them is already 600-700, and will hopefully be in the thousands by year end, so probably not ideal to show them all at once.
I also have a few ideas for facilitating user contributions for the tags, just haven't gotten them implemented yet.
Would be great to add a tag icon in this dialog for anyone with the experimental option enabled, rather than needing a ton more clicks to open the tag list. Maybe to the right of View in Dictionary.
There are most likely *tons* of missing tags, so I appreciate the suggestions. We (me and several volunteers) went and tagged up the N5 word list, so we made enough tags to get at least 1 for most words in there.
Fixed the Machines issue.
I can tell you what I have planned, though - I'd love the feedback. renshuu is getting more and more things that can be crowdsourced, but for most people, going into the menus for many of these is just too much friction for the result.
So what I'm thinking of is adding and promoting a "volunteer" widget for the dashboard. It'll give you kao garden coins, or something else, and it'll (each day, or whenever the user cycles through it) show a volunteer activity that can be done right there.
So, with regards to word tags, it may say "hey, tap any of the below that match for this word", or it might do "look for as many words as you can that belong in the food category".
I think something like this could also be a good vector for getting responses to user comments on sentences. I respond to all of them now (in time), but I imagine the number is going to far outstrip what I can do, and it may take too long, on average, for someone who is willing to answer to see that particular sentence and respond.
If you want to find words by part-of-speech, there is already a filter for that in the dictionary and in Advanced Search. That kind of core grammatical information is already part of the dictionary, so it doesn't require crowdsourcing to add.
The new tags feature is for semantic categories that aren't already listed in the dictionary.
There's no real limit on the number of tags we can have, so I can add music as well. Will have to consider ways to show them once the list gets bigger, but I'm happy to add "Music" (it should now be up)
I also just added a way to directly submit suggestions in the tool.
Are subtags planned? Music could include narrower tags like Instruments, Sound/Audio, Songs, Bands, ...
I think subtags will be the most valuable, since high level ones will likely end up with huge word counts fairly quickly, meaning most words are only vaguely connected.
Planning for it now could save pain down the line. Maybe applying a subtag could auto-apply the parent tag.
I'd say that I intend to have them at some point, yes, but I'm also concerned about the data-entry end of things. When a word has a few tags on it, that's not really too much data, but if, for example, there are 100-150 tags, are people going to just up and say "no thanks, not going to search through these to figure out what to mark this word as"
That could be simplified by showing subtags only under a selected parent tag. Once Music is selected, then show the 5-10 related options. And of course, only show those on the edit page / dialog. Eventually, that could also fade away for most words, since they'll be completed.
The displayed tag could then be "Music > Instrument"
I went in and got counts of all the tags already existing in the original database. There was originally close to 270, but after removing grammatical/language markers as well as ones with 10 or less matches in the dictionary. you have the below list.
I see a lot of these that would be great to add right into the tag system, but even if we add half of these, the list will start getting so long that it's going to be really hard for people to find appropriate tags to attach to new terms.
If anyone is interested in taking this list and trying to make a set of tags and subtags (I can also provide the list of tags already in renshuu), let me know. After seeing this, I think that may be the only way to get this many tags added.
