So I've been studying Japanese everyday for over 260 days by now and I got N5 done and N4 almost done. I can already read some books (on like Tadoku) of N4 and N5 level quite fluently without the use of a dictionnary. However I wanted to expand that a bit by playing Nintendo games in Japanese, like Mario Odyssey or something. I'm obviously expecting to be opening up a dictionnary from time to time if there's terms I don't know but for those that played Nintendo games in Japanese, do you guys think I'd be able to start that out now? And if so, any Nintendo games recommendations? (Most of them use furigana so I'm safe) I also got a good grasp on important grammar but still studying more
I don't think it would hurt to at least try
If you haven't already, I recommend you check out the YouTube channel Game Gengo! He has a video over two hours long on switch games for learning Japanese (no worries though, there are plenty of timestamps so it's pretty easy to skip through the video). I haven't watched the video myself though.
For recommendations I don't actually have an experience myself, but I've heard a lot of good things about Animal Crossing. I imagine Stardew Valley would be good too, but again I'm not quite there yet

Thank you so much for the reply! I actually already watched Game Gengo's video about it and saw that many games he proposed to play I already own them, including Animal Crossing. I think I'll try soon then.

Yes I can totally recommend Animal Crossing to play in Japanese! Since the game is also made that kids can understand it easily, it's a really good tool to practice if you are still on a low level. I'm sure you will already understand a lot I like that the villagers have their own way to talk like some might talk in formal language others use the casual language. You will also learn a lot of new vocab that you won't even have to search for in a dictionary! For example when I wanted to change my clothes in the wardrobe there was the word きかえる and I instantly knew ah it must be the word for "to change"!
Honestly, any game that's intended for a young audience (ages 5-12) can be enjoyable. I've played most of Pokémon Crystal and Mother 3 with a sub-N5 level and could understand most of the dialogue. However, neither of these games extensively use kanji, so the text can be confusing and slow to read. I've also played Yo-Kai Watch 3 and 4 with mixed results because there are a lot of fictitious terms you won't find in the dictionary. I'd recommend starting new lists for unknown terms because the JLPT teaches formal Japanese and most video games use informal abbreviations and slang terms that the JLPT would never teach.
I personally would recommend games where you are already familiar with the gameplay, this way your mind can solely focus on the story! ^^
animal crossing is a game i feel is very beginner friendly - i really like playing New Leaf, or new Horizons, since the text is very casual and due to how the game works its Not a problem if you dont understand certain phrases :3

I agree, in fact if I was to play games I was planning on playing those that I've already played. Because in the end I want to focus more on the text than the gameplay or story itself, so easy games like Mario or Animal Crossing definitely seems like good choices. Thanks for the advice!
