Looking at the usage examples (just under the usage patterns), what part about it is confusing? (This isn't meant to sound condescending, I'm just trying to hone in on which part is the hardest to understand)

It's possible that I overlooked something since this is over my level. Please correct me if there's a mistake.

I have a feeling that this and sense 5 of this page are related expressions because of this:

  • "In casual speech, なんて is often used instead of とは." (Handbook, page 382, …とは〈surprise〉)

In the Advanced Dictionary:

  • This usage of とは's on pages 661-664. However, とは doesn't mention なんて.
  • The entry for なんて discusses the related expression (など)とは on page 341. It says
    • なんて is more colloquial than (など)とは.
    • (など)とは can replace なんて as long as なんて is preceded by one of these:
      • {V/い-adj}inf
      • {N/な-adj-stem}{だ/だった}

Bunpro doesn't have much explanation yet, but they do link to two resources that both mention なんて:

  • JLPT Sensei
    • The related grammar includes a なんて link.
  • jn1et (this page is in Japanese)
    • There's a note about なんて also being available: "4.では「~なんて」となることもある。"
