Now that I'm starting to branch out into more of Renshuu beyond the kana lessons (woohoo!) I'm encountering lots of words that Renshuu seems to have decided for me that I already know--as in, the "I know this" lightbulb is marked. I had an awful tough time in the first grammar quiz, being given sentences full of words I didn't know (but many of which were marked off with "I know this" already) and having to kind of guess around them in order to get to the actual topic of the grammar lesson. So I'm wondering:

- What is the function of "I know this" supposed to be? Does it have any connection to which words/sentences can be included in grammar quizzes, or was that just a coincidence? Does it control which kanji appear with furigana or not? (that was also puzzling to me, that some kanji in the grammar lesson had furigana and some just didn't)

- Is there any programmatic connection between your "I know this" list and the lessons you've studied/your mastery levels?

- If I know the meaning of a word when I hear it or see it in hiragana, but I can't read the kanji in it, should I mark that word as "I know this" yet? I. e. if I mark しい as "I know this" because I know how to say it, will Renshuu think I also know how to read without furigana?

- Is there an easy way to completely wipe my "I know this" to a blank slate? Or a way to view a list of everything that's currently marked as "I know this"? I know I can filter dictionary results by it, but that still requires having a particular search term to filter over. I want to know what everything it thinks I know is.

I know the list it generated for me probably has something to do with whatever I gave as my experience level when I first made my account. I probably said I wasn't a complete beginner, but in reality it's been 6 years since the last time I studied Japanese, so I only half remember the stuff I learned and I don't want to mark anything as "known" until I've fully reviewed it. Would resetting my account give me the chance to start again with the "I have never even heard of Japanese in my life" settings, including an empty "I know this" list? I've only been using Renshuu for a few days anyway so it wouldn't be too big a deal to lose my progress, and if it's the easiest way to wipe the I Know This then it's probably worth it lol. (I haven't found any rare kao coins yet anyway >w>;; )

PS yes I started the grammar lessons before the vocab lessons because that's more interesting to me, so if doing Starter Vocab before Starter Grammar would have taught me all the words used in Starter Grammar then yeah that's on me lol.

Thanks for the question!

So, what is considered known is based on those questions you answered when you first registered with renshuu. I just looked into it, and there appears to be a bug that marked your levels up too high. I fixed them on your account, and I'm looking into the original bug now! Thanks for letting me know.

I know this means less than it used to as the rest of renshuu has progressed more. Basically, something is marked known if:

1. You've studied it on renshuu

2. renshuu thinks you know it based on registration questions

3. You mark it manually with the lightbulb

So, what does it do?

1. Vocabulary - it tries to better feed up example sentences for vocabulary and sentence quizzing

2. Kanji - it will show that kanji without furigana in quizzes/sentences.

So, your known knowledge should look better now that I've fixed that issue for you, but in general I'd only mark them known if you know the word as a whole.

Regarding the Starter Grammar schedule - it IS a bit too difficult currently, and it is something I'm working hard to clean up by....I'm going to say fall, but schedules are really hard when you're the only developer. Every other level after starter is a really good fit, but starter can be challenging for someone just getting started. I'm sorry about that!

Thanks so much for both the clarification and the help fixing that! :D Glad I didn't need to end up resetting my account haha.

I would still kinda be curious just to know whether there exists a place to see a full list of your "known" dictionary entries, but no worries if there's not!

And haha yeah I totally can imagine it being a challenge to sort out all those schedules, you've got a lot on your plate! Especially if you're not somebody with formal training as a teacher. I'm definitely not gonna complain about the lessons not being 100% perfect yet in a tool that you're already offering to folks for free :) I get the impression that Renshuu's strength lies more in vocabulary practice, so it's rad that you're including grammar but totally fine that at least for now we might need to look to outside resources to introduce grammar and then use Renshuu more to just practice grammar that we already understand the concept of. After all, it's called Renshuu, not Setsumeisho :p

But for what it's worth, one example I noticed: こう appeared in one of the quiz questions in the first grammar lesson, even though the ~ou form hadn't been introduced yet. I don't know if that was explicitly part of the writing for that lesson or if it was just an effect of the I Know This, but if it was hardcoded into that lesson's quiz then you might want to change it whenever you're revising the starter grammar.

(and thank you for your patience with my long posts lol)

To see everything you have marked as known or have studied, under the "Learn" dropdown at the top left of the screen, go to Lesson Center, then click ME. Under each heading there is a choice called "My _____" click on that, and you'll see a list of all your terms.

The materials for the grammar lessons are made independently from the vocabulary lists, and so there can be disconnects between what is known and what is shown. We're getting better about it, but not quite there yet!
