Hi all,
I'm so close to going over to the premium side for Renshuu but there are a few issues that I can't work out how to solve. I'm not sure if they're bugs or if I'm just misunderstanding something so I'm posting in here. Hopefully someone will be able to help!
1. More frequent reviews
I'm someone that needs something constantly reinforced for something to stick, and so for the first few times I see a word I have set the mastery schedule to repeat very closely together as demonstrated as below:
I also renforce completely new words with focused reviews during the day. To my understanding the above setting mean I should see any new words show up for review every 1 days for the first for mastery levels and then 2 , 7 , 14, 30 and 120 days respectively. However, yesterday I studied 20 completley new words (and an additional 9, which I know quite well already). The following day, (today) I have only 7 of those appearing in my mastery schedule, and 13 haven't appeared:
Why is this is, there something I'm doing wrong?
2. Not all study vectors are appearing for review
In addition to the above, not all study vectors are appearing for the reviews I have for the day. I like to have to physically type the answer and also do a recall question, so I've set the following:
However, on the review (of the seven above) only one study vector type has appeared. Leading to the below:
I'm not studying all the required vectors and talking longer to master than required.
3. No Kanji in Review:
With the above settings I would prefer on recall questions to show the Kanji with furigana, but instead for most of the questions it shows the kana with a kanji hint. Is there a way to change these settings?
Example:
4. Incorrect Conjugation
I've added the new word "真っ直ぐ行く” as it's something I've picked up in my IRL course. It is admittedly a compound word, but it should use the irregular conjugations of the 行く verb. Unfortunaley there's no specific option for this, so I end up with the below:
Is there a way to fix this or add a new type of conjugation for 行く?
5. Audio
Is there a way to add TTS audio for words that don't have them yet. It's not perfect but I find this helps for recall and pronounciation.
Sorry for the long post, hopefully someone will be able to help with these questions. :)
Thanks for all of the questions!
5. I have no plans to add TTS, and do not intend to do so, sorry! We are in the process of expanding our audio materials, and plan to add a TON in 2023. I realize that a lot of other apps use TTS for some if not all, and while I know that not all users will agree, I'd prefer to have nothing at all instead of potentially stilted and incorrect robot-like voices.
4. I fixed that verb for you. 行く verbs have a special tag added to them in the database, but that tag doesn't get automatically added to custom terms.
3. renshuu's default settings are "only show kanji for what you know or have studied on renshuu". To disable this, open the settings (menu > settings icon if you are on the app, otherwise person icon > settings if you're on the desktop), then go to the Vocabulary category. "How to display unknown kanji": set it to the last option :)
2. Without looking at the specific data, my inclination is to say that the two vectors simply were not both available for that specific day of study. If you'd like me to look into a specific term, the easiest way to do that is the following: while in the quiz itself, tap the ? button at the top of the app/site, and use the "quiz report" feature to send me a report. This will send a detailed copy of your current quiz and all the data in it, making it easy to see if something is coming up :)
1. This may answer part of #2 as well. There is a bit of randomness (which it may be useful to take out when the # of days set is under a certain amount) when scheduling terms for future study. It's not a lot, but some of it is in place to try and let you skip unnecessary studying (for example, a term that you've gotten correct many times will have reviews spaced out slightly more than one that churned at levels 1-3 for some time). Another reason for the small amounts of randomness is to keep the same groups of words from appearing at the same time in the future: small bits of randomness should help them "spread" out and become less ordered.
Now based on what you've said, I totally see how a few small changes in the way that the spacing is done could help. In fact, it may be as simple as "if they have made any changes to the mastery levels, exclude randomness in calculations", and this is something I'd be happy to look at in the next couple of days :)
I hope all of this made sense, and I'd love to know if you still have any concerns or questions.
Wow thanks for such a quick and concise reply, especially on a Sunday!
5. Maybe a compromise could be an option for a user to upload custom audio for vocabulary or a sentance (maybe premium only to cover costs) and also that is only available to that user? That could be a decent compromise and is basically up to the user to decide.
4. Thank you!
3. I think the issue is that I would like the furigana as it helps re-enforce the reading for things I haven't learnt yet. I have set it as this and it isn't as displayed:
I think it should work as the following:
Option 1: Always display Kanji with Furigana. If you have studied the kanji, don't show the furigana.
Option 2: Always show kana with Kanji hint if available.
Option 3: Only show Kanji when available.
2. The thing is I studied the different vectors on the same day, which is why I can't understand why they haven't appeared on the following day, but could be due to one. I'm going to restart the mastery levels (as it's easier to see what I was expecting). When I study tomorrow, I will send through the report. :)
1. I think this exclusion would help massivley if you have the time to look at it! Thank you so much.
Thanks again!
Allow me to point out that Kao Club allows you commission recordings for individual words and sentences.
5. While that is technically possible, it's unfortunately not a realistic option from my standpoint. Renshuu is just me and my wife, and I do all the development, so working on any given feature is not working on something else. While the concept seems simple, I can see a ton of possible feature creep (record vs upload, upload tons of files at once, dealing with file security, people wanting to cache the files on their devices, etc.) that would prevent me from making it a worthwhile feature without a considerable amount of work.
3. What you're saying makes sense. I do not intent to change that specific setting, but I do have an upcoming feature (I cannot say when, but I'd like to hope that it's this month or next) that will work inside of the schedules and do what you're hoping to see. That particular setting does not just govern how things appear in quizzes, but in word lists and sentences as well, so it's not one that can be changed easily without affecting just about every corner of renshuu :)
2. That sounds exactly how the randomizer and adjustments would affect it. One gets a day, the other gets 1.6 days due to various multipliers, adjusted up to 2 days.
1. I'll let you know when this is ready! Should be a fairly easy thing to do.

Please make this an option, then. I've made changes to the default spacing, but I still prefer some randomness. As you mentioned, it avoids the clustering of terms in the long run.

5. Totally understand the issue with scope creep, I work in Product Management so I can see where you're coming from! I figured it could be rather narrow in concept to avoid this, similar to how you attach images to a given word and you could leave it at that. Totally understand the issues with security and caching though.
3. Sounds awesome! I think the current setting is a bit weird because it differs in how you view vocab in quizzes as apposed to how you see them on the rest of the site (e.g. sentences).
2 & 1. Awesome, thanks for this! I've sent through a report this morning if you needed it but sounds like you're on top of it!

Sorry, I'm not overly familiar with what this is? I think this is great for a means of prioritization but I wouldn't want to have to wait for a recording to be done before I wanted to start learning a word.
Will keep the setting in mind.
As to Kao Club, it's a bit of a niche option, mostly for those who have already purchased renshuu pro, but want to continue to support renshuu. My guess is what the above commenter is hinting at is that it could be months before any given word gets audio, so Kao Club is a way to push things you want to the top of the list. While I'd love to have you continue to use renshuu, if more extensive audio is a "must have" before you start to learn words, then it might not be an ideal fit for you.
Regardless, I'll have more info as I finish up the changes I'm thinking of.
Setting added! It has been turned off by default for all existing users (in other words, to preserve the status quo), but turned on by default for new users (in that they'll see it if they make changes to their mastery levels).
If you pop open the global settings panel and search for "mastery", you'll see it.
Impressive. From a UI perspective, I think the checkbox would be easier to understand if it was flipped: Checked means add randomness, unchecked means don’t. Then new users would be default to being unchecked, but legacy users would be checked to preserve the old behavior.

Thank you so much! I’ll give it a test and see what comes through in tomorrows review, :D
Audio isn’t a deal breaker for me (more so the timing of the reviews), but it does help with retention and pronunciation and listening substantially. I’ll still give Renshuu a go and see how I can modify me learning to take this into account. :)
Got something for you to try!
Wow, what a lovely surprise! Seems to be working exactly as described for me so far!
I've encountered a couple of bugs for the new mastery schedules setting though:
1. Not all the the vectors are appearing in line with the strict Mastery schedules. The first set of vectors I had 32, the second I had 15. I've sent through a report but we should probably give the schedule to settle.
2. I seem to have a stuck 9 reviews that won't disappear no matter how many times I study. I've sent through a report on this. :)
Thanks for all of your continued hard work!

Just to add to some of my testing, I think that the new “Always Show kanji for hiragana -> meaning questions” settings is creating an issue where meaning questions do not progress in mastery for some reason. Again, I’ve sent a report this afternoon to help with it. (Sorry for all these reports you must be getting! >_<)
Keep in mind that for the mastery levels, there's going to be lag, because the newer feature will only affect those that were quizzed after the feature was released, and then you'll only see them (at the very earliest a day) later when you see them come up *again*. So it doesn't "fix" anything that already had a schedule time assigned to the next review (where the scheduling was done before the feature was added).
As to the kanji feature, I believe it's working better (properly advancing mastery levels). However, it does not yet work for sentence vocab questions (working on that).
In Shiritori my words played keeps going down for some reason. Before I had over 300 words and now I’m back to around 100. Is this normal?
Which "words played" are you looking at? If it's the leaderboard, that is for the last week (rolling - or in other words, the last 7 days), so it will constantly change as time goes by :)
