Grammar usage notes

と can be replaced with a variety of things. For example, って, and っつ (for っていう), which sounds kind of hissy and mad.

いますか。What did you say? (Polite)
っていうの。What did you say? (Casual) (ってう is pronounced ってゆう, despite how it's written)
なんっつうか?! What did you say?! (Pissed off)

There is a difference in える and う if anybody is wondering

えるis more of the act of thinking, or considering such as
Ex: I'm thinking about it

うis more of opinionated or in a sense of knowing such as
Ex: I think he's right

Isn't it true that you can replace と with って?
おばあちゃん、もうそろそろつくとおもうよ。->
おばあちゃん、もうそろそろつくっておもうよ。

Yea - って is a colloquial way of saying と. Feel free to add this as a usage note to the page!

Studying this as it's own form in Genki 2 とっています。 Should it have it's own grammar section or is it lumped in with these?

What is the definition that it gives for っている, and did genki teach とう separately (and if so, what about the meaning for that one)? I'm curious to see how it separated them.

っています
Genki says "We use the volitional + とっています to talk about our determinations"

So "I've decided to ____" or "I'm going to ____"

Genki teaches it separately, I think because it uses the volitional form and not simple form.

I could see an argument for either way, really. I was just curious if it would be a different grammar point.

http://www.renshuu.org/index.php?page=grammar/individual&id=86 :) One of the first ones that went up on the site, just worded a bit differently in the title.

Hmm. And somehow I've written a sentence for that one and didn't realize it was up there as well. Thanks for the reply.

This looks to me like the citational と. But direct or indirect quotation cannot only be spoken but also written down. I found sentences like XYとされている。/XYといてある。 for "It is written that XY." Care to add? :-[ -------------------------- In DBJG this category also includes phonomimes -e.g. バタバタとる-, phenomimes -e.g. しっかりとにぎる- and psychomimes -e.g. むっつりとっている-. Do those appear somewhere in the grammar library?
