The different particles emphasize how the time/situation is used in the sentence.

に is used to show that something happens during/at that situation.
へ, which typically shows direction, can show something going/coming to that situation.
を treats the phrase as a noun that can be acted on (for example, seeing the situation with ところをる)

I have a lot of trouble differentiating between the three (ところを、ところに、ところで)
My understanding is:
ところで means "as soon as A occurs, B begins"
ところに means "while in the middle of A, B happens" and
ところを means " while A is happening, B is also happening"
Does this sound right?
