Grammar usage notes
The pattern (か)と思ったら/思うと introduces a contrast between expectation and reality, but with a tone of surprise or reversal. It’s often used in spoken or narrative contexts and highlights how quickly or unexpectedly something turned out differently. By contrast, のに emphasizes a contradiction between expectation and reality in a more factual tone, and has a greater sense of disappointment or regret.
