According to soumatome:

Kiru is used in 'an apparent situation in which everything is used with nothing remaining.'

While nuku is used 'when that condition continues until the end.'

Examples given are:

etc.

In jgram.org, it is also mentioned that nuku is used for situations that take great effort.
