Do you see that as a requirement, or just a common usage?

I've encountered this today while playing Dragon Quest 6:
Original
さまがになれるようおりをしています。
はともかくはすでにかなりのおトシ。

My (poor xD) translation:
I'm praying for the King and Queen to get well soon.
Setting the Queen aside, the King has already a certain age.

- Given that, I would like to suggest the addition of "setting aside" as meaning for this grammar point

I took that, and made some clarity adjustments to the meaning.

I'm just leaving a note; I haven't studied this yet.

In the Handbook, page 379, at the start of the entry for とにかく, ともかく is given as another form.

There are three constructions listed from pages 379-380:

とにかく

とにかくV

Nはとにかく(として) -- Likely a match to this page.

In the Intermediate Dictionary, pages 218-219, under the related expressions for なにしろ, there's a short discussion of とにかく. The tl;dr is that とにかく isn't a speaker-oriented expression and can be used for "highly hearer-oriented" use (so the same might be said for ともかく?).

I didn't find renshuu pages for なにしろ or とにかく.
