I notice several of the example sentences for this have か before と思いきや. How does this affect the meaning?
The か is used when there is an embedded question or you wish to express uncertainty rather than an assumption. You’ll see this embedded か appear across quite a lot of different grammar patterns but it’s always introducing an element of questioning or uncertainty.
