instead of "because of," I would say this pattern is more like "it's not like ‾" ie 子 供 であるまいし、暗 い所 が怖 いなんて、おかしいですね It's not like you're a child, so being afraid of the dark is weird.

You can use this with verbs in the dictionary or past plain form plus の as well. It definitely isn't limited to nouns.
In casual speech, the pattern becomes to じゃあるまいし.子 供 じゃあるまいし、そんなに泣 くな。
Added it for noun - talked to a native about the other two - the verbs, and they are rare enough that it sounded rather odd to her to use the じゃ form.
