「すなわち」は、「つまり」より。(objective)
(subjective)なには使うことができない。
その、「つまり」よりフォーマル。

すなわち is more formal, and B will be more objective than つまり. You cannot use すなわち if B is subjective.

This was on the content for the N5. However, when I used it with a friend of mine, he was surprised that I even knew what that was. Is this kind of vocabulary not common for a beginner?

つまり is much more common. I've seen すなわち in writing, but I don't hear it much in conversation.
