I'm not sure I would say this has the same meaning as ところが. While they're both interjections, ところが has a sense that you expected one thing but it's not the case. だが is more a formal version of しかし or けれども
Actually, I marked it as similar, and not same - the site, though, groups those two together. I had the 'similar' and 'same' markings put separately in the past, but joined them together for space concerns. I need to readjust the way that data is shown. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!
