In the second model sentence, I think the kanji for ひいた should be いた rather than いた (which means "to run over"or "pull (a vehicle)")

It's really fixed this time :P. Also, you can use the 'Is the Japanese/English correct' link to make your own edits (which'll get sent to me) without having to write a message down here :)

I saw you mention the "Is the Japanese/English correct?" link in another grammar point but I still don't see it. I've looked like 3 different times. Am I that blind?

How embarassing! I thought those links were appearing for everyone, but they were only showing up for me :(. No wonder they weren't getting used. Well, at least I found it now.

I really think that these 2 patterns are one and the same; just 'instead of'

I tried to adjust the definitions a bit, so let me know if they help.

にかわって shows a replacement of a normal something with something else - where the thing being replaced is what's normally used/present. It cannot be used for something that's changed on the fly. You can use it to say if someone is replacing someone else who is ill/unavailable, or showing change over time (from tapes to CDs, gas-based cars to hybrids), etc.

のかわりに/かわりに shows a balance between the thing replaced and the thing being replaced. In exchange for one, the other is used. This goes well with nouns. It's even clearer with verbs: you say that since you're not doing something, you do something else instead. (Since I'm not going to class, I'll study extra by myself).
