【それとも】は質問の文で使い、２つの中から一つ選んでほしい場合。
It's used in questions. Between 2 things it asks to choose only one.

To add on, it can only be used in interrogative sentences (i.e. questions directed to somebody). It cannot be used in declarative/factual sentences. One is limited to only the 2 choices presented, and is to choose exactly 1 of them.
