Grammar usage notes

you also don't need to exhaustively list out 3, 4, or even 5 things, や is simply saying "things such as A and B (as well as other things)" it is far better to use only two of the things that are immediately on your mind in this pattern and let the rest be implied.

if this concept is harder to follow or your just not used to leaving things unsaid in your sentences you can use など which would be etc.
AやBなど - A and B and etc.

Don't mix it up with と. Remember, と is for a definitive list.
やis used for an indefinite list.

Can you use しか and も in the same sentence as や? It doesn't sound weird to me but I wonder if it might be superfluous, especially concerning しか. Also wondering if it is even possible to use も with や at all.

It doesn't sound possible to me, but if you have a sentence in mind, we can probably give you a better response if we see it :)

Yes, I guess using the sentence I last constructed will do.

"はえんぴつがしかない。" First of all, the usage of や along with しか in this sentence. Secondly, suppose that the case were (probably with something like ten or eleven pencils lol) もある instead of しかない, would that be strange?

I'm taking a look at my favorite grammar dictionary: . It's awesome.

For や in the context that you are talking about, this text states that AやB is followed by things such as だ, かまわない, ~られる. In other words, it seems to usually (always?) be used in a conditional or pseudo-conditional state. (If it's only 2 or 3 ... that's fine.)

On top of that, it states that it is often used with 1~2, more-so than other number pairs.

Oh, so や is sort of like "a couple of"! I might have to look into getting that dictionary ( )for myself, I didn't even know it existed but it seems really handy! Thank you for helping me clear things up. :)

If you can get through it being in all Japanese, it is EXTREMELY useful. It really gets into the fine details of a ton of expressions.
